Thanks. I think I'll go for one then

I wasn't really thinking of using it in an ipod. Its just if I were to sell it on ebay, it would be a selling point to say it works in an Ipod (at least certain models). BTW, I use an iriver so I'm unfamiliar with Ipods.

    Thanks alot, Dafox

I just installed a Toshiba MK6008GAH using the original ZIF cable. Filed down the end a little bit to get it to fit and powered the Acer up. BIOS reports no HDD connected. Flipped the cable over and back to make sure that I had it in correctly. If I flipped the cable over, the One would boot to nothing but a grey screen. If I flipped it back to the original side, it would boot through the Acer startup screen before going directly to the BIOS. Even if the drive is unformatted, it should show in the BIOS correct? Do I have a DOA?

Sounds like either the drive was dead in the first place or you fried the chip by installing it the wrong way the first time.

    Hey isdereks,

I had the same exact problem with the 30GB version of the Toshiba ZIF drive! HOWEVER, it seemed to fix itself somehow. I had installed the drive by sanding down the original Aspire One ZIF cable, then I put the netbook back together and tried to boot up. It went straight to BIOS and would not detect the Toshiba hard drive. I was fed up with it for the night and decided to rip all apart again the next day to make sure I installed the ZIF cable correctly. Flashforward to the next night...I was all ready to take the thing apart when something in my head told me to try to turn it on one last time before cracking it open. IT WORKED!!! The BIOS detected it and I was able to see the drive now. I'm not exactly sure why it would work all of a sudden...but I have a couple theories. The Toshiba drive I bought was supposed to be an OEM IPOD replacement and when I finally got to installing Windows I saw that there was an existing IPOD partition on the drive already. I believe this may be the reason for it not being recognized initially. I think the BIOS had difficulty recognizing this "preformatted" at first. I also read about people's drives being "locked" due to them being for an IPOD...I guess this wasn't the case for me or else the drive should have NEVER worked all by itself. One other crazy theory I have is perhaps by removing the Aspire One's battery pack for awhile after the hard drive not being recognized...and letting it just sit for a little while before trying to start it up again may allow the BIOS for somehow recognize the drive. I say this because I left the battery out of the netbook overnight...and the next day when I plugged it back in, it booted up fine. And one last theory (I promist..LoL), perhaps removing the INTERNAL system battery of the Aspire One and then plugging it back in may reset the BIOS somehow and then the hard drive will be recognized. Anywayz...I hope my experience and long-winded reply to this post helps you in someway.

Damn. I assumed it was a dud so I went and bought a different drive off eBay. Waiting for it to come in. In my frustration I mangled the original cable a little bit so I have to wait for the replacements to come in as well.

After lots of help from SbM on the whole issue of installing OSX I came round to deciding I needed a real HD and not the SSD I had in my AAO.
So with help again from reading this thread, tnkgrl and SbM I decided on the Toshiba MK3008GAL http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Apple-iPod-Ge...40:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ebayphotohosting

How does this meet with the forums approval? Im a little concerned as it makes no mention of netbooks/laptops but it does say its brand new so I can rest easy it isnt out of an old iPod.

My question really is though about the ZIF cable.
I dont want to use the AAO's ZIF cable in case my modding goes awry and I would then be unable to go back to my SSD because I will have sanded the ZIF cable to make it fit the Toshiba HD.
Also from what Ive read it seems that a longer ZIF cable seems to be beneficial but Im a little hazy on what is the optimum size. 55mm ? 100mm?

If someone wouldnt mind just pointing me in the right direction Id really appreciate it.
    Thanks for reading
    Lee

ZIF cables with both a thick and thin end are available on ebay (item #: 220285603455). These should be good for the Toshiba drives withiout filing or using sandpaper.

So what should I do with the Hitachi C4K60?
Should I sell it? Throw it away??? Put a decent cable? Will it work with the new cable?
