If your drive is 5mm high, you won't need to cut anything.

I agree with SbM on the power consumption and the performance. However I did pull out some small stances that were used for some screws. I didn't even try to place the HD without removing them as I wanted to have the HD properly rested on the bottom of the case. SbM, did you take some picture of how you placed the HD without removing the stances?

I placed it the way tnkgrl did, that is I taped it to the underside of the motherboard, not to the case. If you check out her pictures, that's exactly how my own AAO looks now.

Are you aware you can't use the standard ZIF cable included with the AAO with this disc? You need to get a Hitachi compatible cable (or flip cable). Sometimes there are some other forum users that have them on offer as they are listed mostly in bulk (~5pcs) on eBay.

Yes I do realize this, as I am currently looking on eBay and other sites to find just a single one. If anyone has a Hitachi-compatible ZIF cable for sale, please let me know. Thanks much!

    Hi all,
I just upgraded my A110 replacing internal SSD storage with this CF
    http://www.kingston.com/flash/cf_elite.asp?id=2
    using ZIF to CF adapter.
The problem is that the speed doesn't seems change than the SDD, also if the speed is 25MB/sec. read, 20MB/sec. write
Is it normal? What can I do to have a usable windows xp on this machine?

    Thanks!

I contemplated getting a CompactFlash adapter and going the route you did, but after seeing the read/write times, I decided a hard drive would be much more to my liking. I am not familiar with CF, but with the access times I wanted, I would have to spend well over $100, which at that point defeats the purpose. I never thought solid-state devices were good for an OS, but as this is my first machine with an SSD, I thought I would give it a shot.

Just last week, I just installed the Toshiba 1.8" hard drive I got on eBay, and I have been VERY happy with it's performance. It boots fast, performs almost instantly, and hardly has a drain on the battery. I only got a 20GB model, but I have a full install of Windows XP Professional SP3 installed, and have it partitioned to accomodate an extra OS should I decide to install one down the road. The best part? The drive is formatted NTFS. :D

IMO, I would look on eBay, find a Toshiba 1.8" (model ML3008GAL), and use that instead. It uses the original ZIF cable that the original SSD used, and was at most a 1-hour open-to-close. I used Tnkgrl's installation instructions/videos to assist me. If you decide to do it, do NOT get the Hitachi-branded drives, as the cable required comes from China/Hong Kong, and has to be ordered in 5/10 pc. sets.

I bought this "40GB 1.8" Apple IPOD Toshiba MK4004GAH Hard Drive" on ebay.
    Waintig for it..
Thanks fot he seggestions. Anyway any kind of "improvement" on the ssd drive doesn't get usable performances.

You purchased the wrong kind of drive. This one is not a ZIF drive.

I think you can find this kind of adaptors on eBay (search for "ide zif"). But I don't know if you'll have enough room inside the case.

Can one use the below cable instead of sanding down the original?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ZIF-CE-Ribbon-Cab ... m153.l1262

ZIF Ribbon Cable for Toshiba Drive - 55mm Type A

Single replacement ZIF ribbon cable suitable for connecting Toshiba / Samsung ZIF drive to controller.

55mm in length, 20mm in width
    This is a Blue / White cable. Blue = 0.35mm, White = 0.22mm
Electrical contacts on same side of cable

Those should work. I bought something similar from an ebayer in HK. Worked for me, although they are a little bit too short for my liking. 75mm would be better in terms of fexibility of drive location and orientation. I also got some 150mm cables which are probably too long as I think that the Intel SSDs are specified to work reliably with cables up to 100mm long.

So, just to be absolutely clear: A 5mm (single platter) drive will fit inside the AOA 110 with no problem. While an 8mm (double platter) drive will also fit, but only with some modification to the inside of the case?
