IDE 0 and 1 will always show in the BIOS, even if there is only one IDE connection. All standard IDE chipsets are made with two channels. The SATA, as on most motherboards, will most likely be disabled and need to be enabled via advanced configurations or a bios upgrade. I would be very interested to see if anyone can make this work. SATA drives are allot cheaper and have a larger capacity potential than IDE. Not to mention that SATA read/write times are much faster.

Keep up the good work and keep us all informed.

By the way, does anyone have a high resolution shot of both motherboards they can provide me with, I might be able to help out here. Both sides of the board would be best.

    Thanks, T

BIOS updates for both motherboards is the same. So they are identical. Except for the sata receptacle.
So i think this should work.
    Please keep us posted.

I have ordered the sata power & data connector...
... but the power... from USB is a right solution? Only 5V?

USB should work, use power from two ports to power ur HDD, incase the SATA power connector does not work.

Jeepers guys. Think about this for a second: to install a harddrive or SATA SSD, you have to source and install a SATA connector, several surface mount components, hijack the BIOS, and dremal out the pastic/metal standoff molded into the case. Oh, and buy a hard drive.

The HDD version of the Aspire One, with an XP, 1GM RAM, and a 6-cell battery, is $50 more than the SSD model. Less than it would cost you to buy a 120Gb hard drive.

I take back what I said earlier. There is nothing, nothing to be gained by doing this mod. It will only make you an object of ridicule, and with good reason.

Hi rjm, I have 160Gb HDD 2,5" from an external HDD, if is possible to connect, and I think is possible because 150 and 110 are similar, I prefer my HDD at SSD... modification of case and connector are not a problem... is my passion

For those that already have a One, this is cheaper than buying another One. I can see the appeal of the DIY job, Its fun to hack and improve your own machine.

There's a lot to be gained with this mod if have a One, I haven't bought mine yet, so I'll wait and pay the extra $20-$50 and have a HDD built in, although, I may have to upgrade to a larger drive. :D

    Have a great weekend all...

I was buying lots of stuff for the office from Farnell and added one SATA connector. I'm planning on soldering it to the motherboard and test it out. Are 2,5" HDD's powered from 5V? I could just find it somewhere in the power distribution and solder from there, but I need to be sure that it's supposed to run off of 5V.

I currently don't have a 2,5" SATA disk, could I just plug in a 3,5" 500GB disk to test? And power it from my big computer?

Got my Sata and Mini PCI-e connectors today, hopefully I'll find time this weekend to solder them in place and start testing things out. I'll post if I get anything up and running.

This isn't much of an issue for me as i stated before I have already brought my one so I'm stuck with the crappy slow SSD for the time being, but this is maybe a viable upgrade to get decent performance and storage and to be honest I kind of enjoy doing this sort of stuff anyway.

However in hindsight I should have waited for the hard drive versions. ;)

The 2.5" HDD can be powered with 5v. I checked specs for the WD and seagate notebook HDD's. Go with a lower capacity one to be sure.

good luck .. i hope it works and youre able to find place to fit the 2.5" HDD inside the enclosure.
