    Just some clarification here please…

Using a 2.5 inch hard drive requires 5v power from somewhere else on the board? It’s not connected in your images so please tell us what pin your soldering 5v power to.

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_v-n-a2olQ9o/S ... re+017.jpg

Why not solder the HD directly to the board? If you don’t plan on pulling your drive then there should be no problem. Having the female SATA connector is nice but not necessary for this mod. Soldering directly to the board may give you more flexibility in positioning the drive.

Please excuse me if I missed something obvious. I’m in the research phase of planning my One modifications. So far I have the 8 GB SSD version, running XP with 1.5 GB Ram. It’s adequate for most applications but I feel it too slow for serious work.

I suppose a nice approach would be to cut a normal SATA cable and solder the wires directly to the points on the board. That would be rather easy yet flexible.

Hi, I have a few questions about this mod:

Where do I connect the 5.5v power? Do I need to solder to an usb port? Can anyone who has done this mod say us where to connect the power to the drive?

Can anyone tell me where do I can find the connector?

And the last question: Does the bios support a 320gb 2.5" sata drive?

I don't speak english perfectly, hope you can understand me.

Thank you so much for the information!!

Tarjan has gone missing... see my post about soldering it directly to the board. You don't NEED a connector. Tarjan said he used 5v from USB but it does not show in his photos so I'm thinking 5v is already there. I would try this mod but I've went with the 1.8" HD. It was a super easy modification... just plug and play.

Just so you know I haven't completed this mod yet, in fact I haven't even started as my AAO has been on holiday with my older brother for the last two weeks and isn't expected back for another three weeks. I guess you could solder directly onto the board however I like the idea of plug and play compatibility with my devices, I have also found from previous experience that mobile devices with soldered wires that can move slightly have a tendency to break and cause problems but that's just my personal preference.

Myfizz was the one who got the sata connector and hard drive running.

Can't advise on this at the moment as I haven't finished this mod yet. My assumption was that there would be 5V already at the connector pads however looking over my photos there appears to be a couple of surface mount components missing, one of which may be a 5V regulator. When my AAO returns I will get a multimeter out and see if this is the case of not.

    From farnell:
    http://nz.farnell.com/1519812/connector ... 47018-2001
    http://nz.farnell.com/1519813/connector ... 47018-4001

    From Mouser:
    http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDet ... QB7A%3d%3d

Not sure about this, don't see why it wouldn't though. Maybe someone who owns a hard drive version could shed some light on this.

Here's a quick pic of the Sata and PCI-e connectors I ordered from Farnell. I ordered two SATA connectors as I was not sure if the 2001 allow sufficient clearance between the hard drive and motherboard. (the 4001 is 5.15mm (.203”) high as apposed to 4.70mm (.185”))

Tarjan, TY for clearing things up. I'm trying to keep this thread moving.

Another option for adding a 2.5" drive would be through USB. You could use one of the existing ports or you could use the same unused port that tnkgirl (sp?) uses for the internal bluetooth mod. I absolutely positive this would work. You may have to source another 5v power source. Most external drives come with 2 usb connections 1 power and one power and data. Not sure why...

No problem, Once I have my AAO back again I plan on finishing this mod and will write up a full post with photos of what I did so others can follow my steps if they want.

Yeah you're entirely right about using a USB to SATA or IDE converter to mount a hard drive in the AAO however you would then be limited to USB transfer speeds.

The reason 2.5" external hard drives require two USB connections is due to the current limitations (500mA from memory) enforced by the USB standard, this means you need two USB connections to supply enough power to the hard drive.

Most 2,5" disks have been designed to work fine on 500 mA (which is the USB standard). However, not all usb ports can provide 500mA of power (hubs etc.) and during negotiation (usb protocol) the slave device is informed of the current it is allowed to use. If this is too low then a second cable is needed. But most of the time a single cable works just fine.

USB 2.0 can be very fast depending on the drive and number of devices using bandwidth.

A large percent of the Hitachi Deskstar HDs 120+GB are 700 mA
Thats what the ppl experiencing with the screen Flicker at the lowest Brightness setting, with out Power cord.
So you might wanna consider that also... But i dunno since i dont have 2.5" HD

My AAO working fast now in XP Pro Sp2, but still the problem my display always flicker when use batery. Maybe if I use 6 cells batery can fix the problem.

Hi, what is the power consumption of your HDD ?
USB ports can only deliver 500mA normally.
In your specs, the power is 5.0W.
    So 5.0W/5.0V = 1.0A ?

I'm guessing the 5V is generated in one place distributed to the different usb ports (among other things). One should be able to find the 5V source and use much more current than one usb port can handle.

There were reports that the motherboard for the SATA HDD model has a small extra component that sits next to the SATA connector supposedly for voltage control. Also I remember the old 2.5" enclosures required two USB ports to be fully powered, so that may be the reason for a screen flicker when running a 2.5" drive off of one single USB power source without something to buffer or ramp up the DC voltage.

I convinced my friend to get a model 150 whereas I have a model 110. He ordered extra RAM which we'll be installing sometime this week. I'll take side-by-side photos of the internals so we'll once and for all have decent reference pictures. Hopefully that'll shed some light on this and other upgrades.

    To Vbelo,
I`ll directly soldered sata cable power to usb port betwen lan port and sd port, and it`s work normal in my AAO. The time cycle of the batery is 1:50minute when I user this harddrive
I hope anyone can share picture AAO 150, and schematic of motherboard.

Since with this solution USB is over-current, it may damage the motherboard ...
I'll test later when people would have use this hack for a month without problems.
