That one is designed for 1.8" HDD. Is that the same IDE connector as on the 2.5" HDD's?

I believe so. Theres no chips on that board so im guessing its just a physical adapter so *should* work. I'll check out the pinouts because im not too sure 2.5" HDD draws power from the interface like zif does.

Though if it didn't worst case you'd just have to power the hdd with a seperate wire soldered in elsewhere, would be 5V.

**EDIT** Just realized that that particular adaptor isnt for laptop IDE, its for the other type for 1.8" HDD.

This is more what I was thinking about:

Make sure the Zif adapter can provide the added power needed by 2.5"

NO The 120-160GB versions use a 2.5" Hard Drive with a SATA connector on the buttom side of the mother board.
The SSD version uses a conector called ZiF Connector.
Most ppl that stuff a 1.8" Hard Drive in the AAO are using a 1.8" that has a ZiF Connector Build onto it.
In other words they are just using the Same connector that the SSD version is.
In other word instead Adding a missing SATA Connector they use their present ZiF Connector.

Original SSD case is not designed for a a 1.8" but its easily Modable to fit a 1.8" comfortably.
Original HD Case should have enough Space w/o a Case Mod to fit a 1.8" But is missing the ZiF connector on the mobo.

    So you are planning to stuff a 1.8" into a AAO 2.5" ??? (Downgrade isn't the 2.5 better ?)
Or you are planning to stuff a 2.5" into an AAO SSD ??? (Very Little Space for added adapter, SSD case is smaller and no vents)

Planning on stuffing a 2.5" in there.

The adapters I listed will not work without modification because it will convert the 5v into 3.3v, not the other way around. The things were desgined for putting the 1.8" inch drives into a 2.5 socket, not the other way around.

But if you could desolder the voltage regulator (much better soldering a cheap baord than soldering on a surface mount sata port) and replace it with a wire going to 5v that might work. I looked at the pinouts of zif and the pinouts for 44pin notebook ata and pretty much all of them are common.

If the adapter you are getting is stepping 5V down to 3.3V, it might be possible to desolder the transformer and reverse the polarity to step the voltage up instead. Just an idea. :)

    Hi to all,

Just added a sata hard disk to my one and also have get the 5v on the sata connector :D by shorting R364 I think (I forgot to write it down) . You should be able to tell from my pic of it. I have no screen flicker when on battery. the voltage at one side of the R364 was about 5.1v which will do the no harm.

I will open it up and check it.

Over all I am very happy with my one now :D :D :D :D

I am glad someone could verify it. I got the connector from a 2.5" hard disk caddy that was broken.

There is one thing I can say "there is a big speed diffrents to ssd. I wished I had done this mod sooner.

So you have to short that, and put a wire to the socket also?

No that wire is there because some of my pins on that sata connector came off. It is just a ground. you will not need it. My sata connector was taken from a 2.5" hard disk caddy thats why some of the pins are missing.

what I am saying if my ground pins were there, I only whould have to short R364 and the power will be on the sata connector and you would not have to take the power from some ware else.

I have small flicker on my screen when dimed down 3/4 of the way but have no flicker when the screen is dimmed 1/4 of the way down. I will be working on a fix to this, hopefuly tonigh. I will post the results and take some pics as well
