Its called modding, Modding is not always practical. LOL
But i like modding. Whats fun is a computer with 8GB thats like Pentium I/II Times.
Besides i sure in hell like lots of space. I already have used up 25 GB out of my 100 GB LOL.
External HDD, like the person says above, is another thing to loose And has no Cool factor at all.
I'd prefer going to Internet Cafee and just woop my Acer out and start surfing the web.
Don't want to fiddle with an external HDD. Try using the acer on ur lap with a external 120+ HDD.
    Thats just me

I just think the 120 GB 2.5" in a SSD version Casing is not reliable. Power Wise, Heat Wise and Space wise.

Yes. It is possible as long as you have 2.5" SATA HDD. Someone even said external HDD with the same size often is cheaper to buy then HDD itself from any computer shop...

I guess the 120GB version comes with a SATA HDD. I'm going to get one of these HDD once I have money and will post back results. Would be nice to have a 320GB aspire one...

My previous model was 320GB. I changed HDD as a mod but I sold previous AA1. Now I have 110 purely because is more space inside :)

What would that be good for ?

Even if you would like to, the hdd is too big (15mm) and it surely will meltdown your AAO.
The hdd is shipped with a heatsink (big one which enlarges it to 3,5 form factor) so it will overheat for sure - as much as it will eat up your battery.

I was Asking and Not saying that it be practical LOL
Just Wanted to know if these are able to be stuffed into the AAO without Heat Problems.
Still wanna know if, it ll be interesting.
I never said into the 110. Obviusly i meant into the 150 version that already has a 2.5 Case.

    Typo

    The 150 can accomodate a 2.5" drive, not a 3.5" one.

My SATA connector has been ordered and is on its way from http://dk.farnell.com/1519812/connector ... 47018-2001

This tread has sort of gone stray, and we have still to see pictures of someone who successfully soldered the connector and fitted a 2.5" disk into the AA1-110 chassis. So, could any of those who have done so, please show some pictures (before I destroy my 110 ;-)

Anyone have a photo of the mainboard with this socket ( http://dk.farnell.com/1519812/connector ... 47018-2001 ) inplace please give me a link.

I'm in Bangkok, Thailand and can only get this one
    [IMG]
Which it is NOT the right one, so I'm considering to order one from farnell, If it is the one that can sit perfectly on the mainboard.

Just for the record, if anyone was wondering why I never got around to modding my AA1 with the 2.5" hard disk, here is the reason.

Though I liked the AA1 in most respects except for its 8 GB SSD I found a buyer for my used AA1 and will replace it with probably the Lenovo Ideapad S10. I favour this particular model due to its Expresscard 54 slot, which will allow me to add a compact flash reader to it so it can be used for fast and efficient transfer of images when on the road. I regularly produce several gigabytes of RAW files per day, so fast transfer and storage space was essential.

So, bye for now, at has been a pleasure to be part of the AA1 forum.

    Hi Tarjan

I'd be intrested in how you get on, Mines a Sata HDD version, the base caseing is definately deeper on this than the SSD versions, apart from the mounting pillars used by the SSD.
I'm trying the other way around to add the IDE connector and lead out via the GSM expansion cover to use a CF card reader. underneath.

    Graham ;)

To all the other people who did this mod. I was wondering if any body found a sata connector that was long enough so that the retaining clips actual fit the holes on the motherboard? I know this would have mad things a lot easier.

    Hi,

I have some questions about this mod:

What about the battery life? How many time whit a SATA HDD?
Does the screen flick if you change the back light of the screen?

I don't speak English perfectly, hope you can understand me.

    Thanks!

no point.initially i having a same idea as you, unfortunately the "point" or pcb is not a thru hole design for this connection. atleast one or more point was unable to go tru when i try it last few days. i even try to use some kind of sharp and strong object to do that. luckily this did not hurts my One.
