If you´re not comfortable with soldering the small points needed for the 2,5" SATA mod you shouldn´t attempt it. One false move and you may end up with a bricked AAO. The number of points needed to solder are 6, but they are in close proximity (about 1,5mm apart).

I´ve compared my 2,5inch to a friend of mine that used a 30GB 1,8inch iPod classic HD. Using ATTO benchmark i get 50% faster raw transferrate. over the whole test. Startup time with XP is 15 seconds on mine and 20 on his. On regular use mine is more snappy in response and when accesing large number of files across the drive is much faster (probably accesstime related). Batterytime doesn´t differ.

That said it´s an easier mod with the 1,8inch.

    I also manage this trick.
Only that used just wires instead of any connector, I was solvering the wires directly to pin 2,3 and 5,6 and the power to pin 7 on the power bank (i also solved them right on to the HDD). Pin 6 and 5 where missing a hole so i took the ground from another point on the MB. As everyone else i also had to shorten the R364 The HDD fit perfect in to my case. I also tried installing debian linux to it yesterday, and that was a quite diffrent, it where installed a lot faster than with the stock SSD.
Havent tested the speed yet with hdaparm, because i finished this hack kind of late yeaterday so i had to go to bed.
I'll post the sresultresult later this evening.

I did test with hdaprm and i got this read reults:
    Code:
    acer:/home/jrs/tmp/linux-2.6.28# hdparm -tT /dev/sda2

    /dev/sda2:
     Timing cached reads: 1058 MB in 2.00 seconds = 528.94 MB/sec
     Timing buffered disk reads: 192 MB in 3.02 seconds = 63.55 MB/sec
    acer:/home/jrs/tmp/linux-2.6.28#

i thinks its quite good results, compared to what i had with the SSD. I have no idea how to use hdaparm to check write speed.

I tried it and it works. 2.5 inches hard disks are less expensive. I bought a 250 GB one and I can save a lot of data.
Happy! I like my ACER ASPIRE ONE.

I have the 120GB HDD version of the AAO, is it also possible for me to fit a bigger 2.5" if I want more space or is this only an option for the SSD version?

As long as it is the same formfactor and standard 2,5" it should fit just nicely, mine certainly does although not an OCZ but from what I can make out thay are the same size.

I would think so.. then one could buy an usb wifi and solder it to the usb output of this device.
I also did the 2.5" sata in mine.. 250gb.. it is no lightning fast compared to before!

yes this is veary possible. my AAO came with an 8 gig ssd and now i have an 80 gig 2.5" satta drive in it, you have to solder the satta conector to the mobo so its not recommended for first time solderers
