I just picked up my acer today (linux version) and am pretty happy with it so far.

I've already enabled advanced mode and installed firefox 3 with the help of these forums.

I've also run in to a problem:

    1) When I open my file manager the location bar (the thing second level down where you can type in a location) starts with "My Disk:///" is that normal? If not, what did i do for that to happen, and how can i fix it?

Is it even really a problem? Thanks for all of the great info on these forums, it is making my dive into linux that much easier!

Hi Brian, welcome to the forums.

This is normal as far as I know. Are you a windows user normally?

Yup, windows through and through. I actually like Vista, unlike a lot of people (at least that is my impression).

But, I picked this netbook up for a couple of reasons: 1) I needed something light weight and easy to carry around at school to take notes with (grad student) and 2) I got the linux version as opposed to the XP version because I thought it might be fun to tinker around with Linux and gain a better understanding of it.

So far, I've changed the clock setting to 12 hour time, downloaded, installed, and updated the desktop icon for firefox 3, and made some modifications to what applications show up in the four squares...all without knowing crap about the code i was using to do some of it with. Now i just need to understand what a command is really doing when i type it in.

Thanks for the help so far.

    hey.
I used to use windows every day at home. i actually had a copy of vista and thought it was a vast improvement over xp. i turned off some of the annoying features and my pc was powerful enough so maybe i was lucky.

    anyways.

yeah the mydisk:// is normal for this laptop.
in linux you dont get a C:/ or anything like that.
your My Documents could be compared to the mydisk:// idea. Someone can correct me if i'm wrong, but I think on the AA1 the mydisk is their way of making the mounting of the external SD card pretty.
basically in linux your My Documents is usually stored as /home/username/
on the aspire its /home/user/ so nothing strange. however as you can up this storage space i think they have just called it mydisk:// in thunar (the Explorer equivalent)
might be wrong, it might always be called that in thunar.

but yeah, its light weight and fast. and linux is fun to mess with. do remember to back up things u are changing though. I forgot to backup my group-apps.xml yesterday and it reset itself.. had to do all the fixing again. grrrr

just be warned, the more you use the command ling the more you wonder how you manage to use windows without it!
