    Hello,
    Interesting thread, huh?
Yes, I'm trying to get 2GB RAM on my Aspire One.
The way I figure it, the motherboard takes 2GB RAM max. but there is 512MB RAM on boarded, so if you put in a 2GB RAM stick it's already 2.5GB and there's no such thing as a 1.5GB RAM stick.
So I'll keep looking on trying to disable the on boarded RAM, if that works, I'll try to put in a 2GB RAM module. :D
    Wish me luck,
    GvidoR

I wish you luck - you need it as we all know it is impossible ;)

How do you know? It might as well be possible, but no one has found a way of doing it... YET! :D

True. Nobody figured out how to do that - yet. I think even if it's possible to disconnect/switch off on-board RAM it will be really hard job to do - probably next to impossible. I look forward to hear about your progress :)

I found one forum post saying that MSI Wind has an option on the BIOS to disable the onboarded RAM.
Maybe I could contact Acer and ask them what's the story - Is it true that the motherboard takes 2GB RAM and will there be a BIOS released that could give us an option to disable the onboarded RAM.
Although Acer might not even be interested in that...

how about you just find the pins to the onboard RAM chips that send voltage into the DRAM, and just terminate each set of leads to a common point, so that the circuit closes...then it should take the 2GB DIMM just fine, right? You can borrow my chainsaw for the mod...for as long as you need it.

I was hoping of getting a software solution for this as it appears that MSI Wind has an option to disable the onboard RAM.
Anyways 1.5GB and 2GB is not much of a difference, right ? ;)

Vmware runs super slow on AAO. I run vmware on my desktop and use remote monitor on the AAO. :> The result if a Vm that's much faster than the AAO.

it's not an ideal solution, but it's a requirement that I have. If I really need horsepower, my Quad core laptop w/4GB of RAM, and 3x160GB HDD's in RAID-5 can handle it, and failing that, I've got the ESX cluster I built at work that has 10 machines with Quad quad cores.

does the motherboard really support 2gb of ram?! if i does then this is great because i purchased the 1gb ram model of the aspire one so the chip in it at the moment is 1gb so i could just add another to make 2gb! :D

If it were that easy everyone would be doing it..

Your aao has 512mb ram built in and another 512mb installed in the slot. There's your 1gb. If you take out the existing 512 and install a 1gb, you'll only have 1.5gb.

This might be a BIOS thing. the Lenovo S10 has 512 on board, but if you install a 2 gib chip it egnores the 512 and gives you 2 gig?

Turning off the onboard ram is indeed possible within the Wind BIOS, allowing for a single bank 2GB ram upgrade. And yes, following shared design origins, both motherboards can handle 2GB of ram. You should ask them about it. You already got a no, so there's nothing to loose ;)

    Cheers,

My Spanish is pretty bad, but would that mean with PAE (Physical Address Extension) enabled, the Acer One will accept a 2GB module and ignore the 512 on board ram? Effectively making 2GB ram on the Acer possible.

What PAE enabled means is that it'll prevent certain codes from excuting on the hardware level. It makes your processor run at 36bit instead of 32bit. It has nothing to do with the amount of ram AAO can use. The poster above you posted random things about PAE and his boot.ini file.
