When using a 3G card, which was a little bit scratched I obviously destroyed some spring inside the slot. ACER Germany wants to have almost the same price for repair as for a new NetBook. Who knows how to open the PC to access that slot? I will try to repair myself, since all other functions are ok. It is an Acer Aspire One Model no. ZG5

Which card slot do you think is messed up? The one on the power cord side or the other one?

I was watching the following video....

again to refresh my memory and near the end (about 10:16) of it you will be able to see the one on the power cord side is soldered directly to the motherboard. This means that unless you really know what you are doing and have good low watt soldering iron you should not mess with trying to solder there as it is quite easy to ruin the motherboard. The other sd card reader is attached to the small daughter board on the other side of the computer and the same holds true for soldering on that board also. However once you get it apart you may see something that is bent or some such problem that could be fixable.

The reason Acer wants so much is they will be replacing the motherboard as it is easier. Hope this helps.

...sorry, I forgot to say which port it is: It's the one behind - or in front of, depending how you look at it - the battery pack. I've had the idea, if it is not to repair, I can probably use a USB-stick and run 3G over that one, just in case..

    Now that confuses me.

When you say 3G what do you mean?

At first I thought you were thinking the zg5 used 3G instead of PCIe wireless (WIFI) but then decided you meant you were using a 3Gig SD card in the SD card slot. Now it sounds like you are using a 3G modem (which I have never heard of) that plugs into the card reader just below the power switch. If it is a modem then you may find a USB card reader may not work as the system will see the reader and may not see the modem. I suspect that if it is a modem then it probably wont fit in the other SD card reader but since I have never heard of such a device I don't really know.

Judging by this description, you're talking about the SIM card slot that's concealed by the battery. They're relatively simple to replace, but you have to be very, VERY careful as it's a Surface-Mounted component. If you're not careful, you'll do what I did when de-soldering it and you'll end up ripping a solder pad or two off the motherboard. Otherwise, you'll need the right SIM card slot for your model, and they're usually only 6-8 pins.

My ZG5 does not have a SIM card reader in that spot just an empty area where the reader could be. So I didn't think of that. But that really does sound like what he is talking about.

Good evening to all. Yes, it is the SIM card slot behind the battary pack. This probably because it was a special package sold by German Telekom, in combination with a SIM card and a time dependant contract. But with the information you provided I am able to open the machine and try to repair it. If I can see what kind of slot it is I will try to get it as a spare part. I don't know if Acer will sell it to me. Anyway, thank you for your help and kind regards from good old Germany.

If you are able to get the new part it would possibly be helpful if you posted such information for others so maybe someone could add that function and or fix their computer.
