Yeah, I didn't think about the wet napkins. Good idea. Also, this method is usually best to desolder something you want from a board you don't want anymore. Like I said, I was successful in desoldering something I needed from a board I needed, but I was pretty lucky that there wasn't any other components really close by to accidentally remove.

To get my hands on a PCIe wireless module I'm thinking of buying a second-hand USB modem that contains one and dismantling it.

If the host USB modem is 'locked' to a particular operator's network will the module I liberate from it also be locked to that network? Or is the locking of the USB modem accomplished though software in other components?

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you buy a 881u and it is locked to ATT, and you remove the MC8781 card, the card is still locked to ATT.

To unlock you will need to use a program like "DC Unlocker".

I made this mod useing the guide, it workes very well. I use the same 3G card as in the guide but with another antenna, a larger one made from sheet metal bought off ebay, mated with a longer coax cable to reach up to the screen where it is located.

I had way better reception then a friend useing a stock USB dongle up in the Swedish mountains this past week. I downloaded with the speed of 1.5Mbit which I think is good enough :)

the hard part was to find the correct drivers to get it working on Win7... *phew*

Where did you find the Win 7 drivers?

    Your antenna sounds interesting...

Yeah that is the one. I guess this confirms that it is good and it fits very well as my research also lead me to the same antenna :)

I bought a kit like that from the Hk version of Ebay, the sim holder needs slight modification and adding loose wires to connect to the main board.

i used one of the ebay kits to do the hsdpa mod. the sim card reader is not electricly compatable with the aspire one it needs rewired or it will melt your sim card! luckily my sim still works even with a hole melted in it.

my main question is has anyone got the 3g led on the laptop working? my 3g is working perfectly but the led on the front is not coming on with the hsdpa does any one else have this problem?

As above - I've also performed this mod and it works great. The only fiddly part was soldering the fly leads onto the sim connector.

I'd also like to know if anybody managed to work out how to get the 3g led working when the 3g card is enabled.

    Hi,

I heard Sierra wireless created a new mini-PCi-embedded module with voice support :MC8792V and MC8795V .They should fit in the mini-PCI slot of our AOA150bw.
But will it be possible to add voice support so that will be possible to use our AOA as a cellular phone?
Of course we need to add a microphone (soldering)and speaker ....

    Ciao

Sweet find, that will make moding the AOA110/150 much easier.

    Thanks

Just to confirm that I bought one of the sim card readers listed above and fitted to my second aspire one (an A110 with a 64gig Kingspec SSD) and they are indeed a direct pin match and work perfectly.
I did have to file the plastic slot behind the battery very slightly in order for the sim card to lign up perfectly with the reader but I also had to do that on my other aspire with a modified sim reader.

I have read this thread from the beginning and am left with a couple of questions....

! I have a aaod250 and there is already a mini pci-e slot on my machine so do I just have to have a sim slot soldered in?

    or

can I just get a mini pci-e hspa card that already has a sim slot on it and use that?

    thanks
