Thanks to all who have contributed to this board with advice which has helped me.

I have modest computer skills having torn down and reassembled quite a few notebooks. So discovering I needed a bigger HD than the 120gb that came with my AA1 AOA 150-1570 was inspired by “Aspiringnut” and the ambitious 500gb 7200 Seagate Momentus upgrade. I bought a WD 500gb 5400 Scorpio and have been 95 per cent successful with the new set-up, installing my own XP Home and all drivers from Acer Aspire One page. Device Manager all OK, machine boots nicely, wireless fine and I am good for heaps RAW image file space – major capacity objective achieved.

However: I have a few niggling problems and wonder if any kindly members can help? I have run an XP repair and removed and reinstalled the Acer Realtek zip

    1) I have no speaker sound, but I do have jack/phone audio – any suggestions?
    2) Don’t use webcam, but is there software program to make it work with say, Skype?…….keeping up with my 22 yr o youngster!
    3) Any way to get hold of an original hard drive-image CD as in installation process I corrupted the original XP drive (I think) and managed to make my original disc-image inaccessible.
    4) How about installing Windows 7? – “GvidoR” says: When you install Windows 7, there are only two missing drivers: *Card Reader *Wireless and download links are provided – would this solve problems?

Thanks in advance for any help; views.

Are you sure speakers plug is OK?? This small, white one connected to mobo...

Skype should detect camera aumagically w/o drivers. My one does so I do not see why your one shouldn't...

Re: 500gb XP upgrade | speaker audio

    Dear “melhiore”

You were absolutely right first time – speaker wires/plug itself had dropped under mobo and I had not replaced plug into white receptacle/socket to right of track-pad ribbon-trap.
I suspected a connection problem, but was reluctant to pull down the case again as the three sprung keyboard top-tabs had given me rather a hard time, so I was pleased to have your second opinion – speakers and audio jack now working fine.
Anyway, in the interests of good maintenance and common-sense it’s on with Norton Ghost or I might give Macrium Reflect a go.
Once again, thank you for a prompt, accurate and helpful reply - pint of Chester’s Mild was it?

    Kind Regards

KEYBOARD REMOVAL NOTE: When opening the case use an old plastic credit card or similar to push back tabs releasing the keyboard, and unlike one You Tube video instructs, push in but NOT UP – this especially applies to the tab under the battery and drive tell-tale lights on fascia as a fixed plastic light frame inside makes it near impossible to push the tab from the inside of the cover back down into position in the retainer slot. The other two tabs are accessible from the back of the fascia.
