Anything new about bigger batteries for the AA1? Seems as if there is still no alternative to the genuine Acer battery :(

I'm the one who wrote up that quick comparison that AmigaNG linked to. (Thanks for the linkage, btw!)

My opinion of the 6-cell is highly favourable. Honestly, the difference in looks is hardly noticeable from a practical point of view. When the screen is open, the extra "bulge" from the 6-cell becomes less apparent and is certainly NOT noticeable from the front. The difference in weight is also minor, IMO, and doesn't make the 6-cell version any less portable than the 3-cell version. Anywhere you can take the 3-cell, you can also take the 6-cell. (Unless you were trying to pass it through a slot cut exactly to the dimensions of the 3-cell unit ;) )

I think this picture explains it best:

I've read this upcoming Dell Mini supposedly has a "4-cell" battery, although the "leaked" specs suggest its battery life is no better, maybe even worse than AA1's 3-cell (http://gizmodo.com/5038298/leaked-dell- ... lease-date).

I've just wondered though -- is there some reason most batteries are 3-cell and 6-cell? There's all this insane technology coming out in every facet of life, and yet they can't create a way to do 4-cell or 5-cell batteries? :? I'd think a 4.5 cell battery for $59 would be easier to stomach.

I assume I can't get a factual answer to this unless I track down an engineer at a battery manufacturer. :p

Likely has to do with the voltages involved. Depending on the construction and materials certain combinations have "natural" voltage or potential differences. Typically these differences are not that much so you have to put 3-cells in series to get the required voltage.

Once you have that voltage you must stick with it. So a 6-cell battery just has two groups of 3-cells in parallel (not series) so the voltage is the same but capacity is pretty much doubled. I don't know all the details, but these are likely some of the reasons for this, plus other factors like types of Li-Ion batteries, etc.

    What about a 9 cell??
isn't there any 3rd part retailers going to sell us a 9cell (or even 12 cell battery???)
imagine, more than half a day of autonomy and I'd be ready to go anywhere with the one.
Cause for now it's a bit lame still.

Okey, I like the ideia of having the 6-cell autonomy BUT I would hate to spend more than 50€ for the 6-cell and carrying around a 3-cell battery just for that extra 2h that maybe i'll need it once in a month isn't just my style. So, isn't there a cheap way to connect something to the One just to have another couple of hours of freedom?
That would solve the extra weight problem along with those not so beautiful looks...

extra 2 hours? the 6-cell battery lasts 7 hours. that's not a two hour difference from the 3-cell battery.

the question is: what would I do with a 3-cell battery if I had a 6-cell? if I had 7h I wouldn't need an extra 2h (ok, maybe twice a month, but for that I wouldn't be carrying it around so it would be useless)

So you can quickly change the 6 cell for 3 cell battery when you see a cute girl walking towards you ;-).

Well, that IS a good reason!
Unless, of course, it happens like, once every 5 mintutes or so... then you'd only have 2h of sunshine ;)

Ok this is my plan. I will buy the 6-cell 160GB version mainly because it is the BEST DEAL out there!!!! Biggest bang for your bucks! Then if I am concerned with the looks and sexiness, I will buy a regular 3-cell battery as an extra and use it on days I want it to look sexy. Then I have the 6-cell on days when I am on a long trip. Solved!
