I have an Acer Aspire One with a dual boot WinXP / Ubuntu Netbook Remix. I am trying to play 720p MKV files in Ubuntu, but they play terribly slow. In Windows, I have been able to get them to play just fine, using the CoreAVC codec.

I've followed the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video howto over at ubuntuforums dot org, and regular videos play fine, but 720p MKV's are still extremely choppy in both Totem Movie Player and VLC. I haven't been able to get Mplayer to work, and I think that it is a known bug with Netbook Remix, see bug 370246.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with 720p MKV files in Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire one or similar netbook. Am I doomed to use Windows for HD videos?

    Hello...
First of all install XBMC on your Acer Aspire one... Here are the instructions... http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33327 It is the best media player EVER!!!

Then make sure that your CPU is running at full speed... When you open XBMC it must be 1.6 GHz not 800 MHz... If you are at 800 then you need to follow these instructions... http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-change-cpu-frequency-scaling-in-ubuntu.html Make sure that the speed is 1.6...

With this setup i can play videos up to 1080 (downscaled) with mu humble A110L...

    Hope i helped you...
