That is pretty much the only player I use. So far I've played several 720p video files using VLC 0.9.4. Once in a while there'll be a framerate drop down to about 15, but usually stays at 25 or above. They're all encoded in MP4/.mov with 6754 Kbps.

KMPlayer looks pretty nice, but doesn't it also use FFMPEG to decode videos?

I'm not sure. Would there be any disadvantage to it? Because it plays .mp4 files relatively well.

I actually installed the klite codec on my Acer One and it now plays 720p x.264 which were previously unplayable. Every day I start loving this machine a little more.

You have the option to use external codecs, so it uses whatever you want it to use. ;)

I suggest MPC-HC (Mediaplayer classic homecinema, not the normal mediaplayer classic) for 720p playback combined with CoreAVC 1.8.5.0. I've had 0 problems playing back even high bitrate 720p HD-DVD rips that I've made with it, and it's more than 2x faster than any libavcodec based decoders (FFDShow, VLC). I recommend disabling the internal h264 decoder and mkv splitter and switching to EVR (or EVR custom presenter if you use subtitles) once you install it, atom's powerful enough with coreavc to play back most of my 720p h264 videos even at 800mhz on battery power. If only GMA950 had h264 decode acceleration, here's hoping the next netbook chipset does :D

    Great minds think alike :D

That's exactly the same setup I use, except i use custom presenter for everything. It seems to work a bit smoother for me. My only complaint about the HC version of MPC is that Haali renderer doesn't work well for some reason. Not a problem though, i like EVR just as much.

I have seen some high bitrate scenes that can make it choke a little, but it's very rare. Try the beginning of a Marvel film like spiderman. For a brief bit, every frame is totally different than the previous and the cpu use spikes to nearly 100.

Tried turning off deblocking? Using custom presenter might slow it down if there actually are subtitles muxed in, there's a pretty big hit for subtitle rendering. Do ya have deblocking turned off? I use custom presenter 99% of the time too :D Are you on vista or XP? upgrading to .net 3.5sp1 if you're using lower might help, theres MS hotfixes for vista that speed up EVR too that arent on windows update :D

yeah, i've tried it with de-blocking off and no subs, it's just such a high bitrate scene that pushes the atom to the limit. i am running it on xp sp3 with .net 3.5 sp1

99.9% of the film is fine so i'm not too bothered.

Has anyone found a way to remove the tearing without resorting to the Direct3D option that basically gets rid of the menus too?

i never noticed any tearing issues with the custom presenter on MPC-HC, and i was looking for it quite carefully.

    Download the newest CCCP pack.

    Download Codec8 from free-codecs.com.

    Install CCCP.

    Install Codec8.3.

Go to ffdshow video codec config and select none for h.264.

    Watch all your 720p stuff.

I use VLC media player, it plays all formats, I have not had a problem with short freeze, or pauses, or stopping or anything, 720p works with vlc for me anyway. Even with subtitles.

Again, MPC + ffdshow + CoreAVC = 720p Playing allright.
Only on heavy bitrate escenes tend to slow down a bit.
Tried so far: Applessed Ex Machina, Sunshine, Animatrix.

Also, on the ffdshow codecs settings, h.264/Avc to Disabled for coreAVC to manage that, and in Raw Video put "all supported" if you want embedded and srt, txt, etc external Subtitles. ;3

Tried several methods mentioned here, but no luck on windows 7, i get audio and video however the video plays uber slowly whereas the audio plays normally =/

Anyone have any methods that definitely work on 7?

AAO is capable of playing these 720P hi-def videos with these specifications perfectly without frame drop at 24fps and 30fps.

Tests that i've done with 720P videos encoded in various codecs
Decoder used, coreavc (h.264), divx (mpeg4 and divx (modified mpeg4) )
    h.264/avc 64kbit-3024kbit/s with 128kbit/s mp3/aac /ac3audio at 75-85% cpu load
    mpeg4 64kbit-3504kbit/s with 128kbit/s mp3/aac/ac3 audio at 75%-85% cpu load
    divx 64kbit-3504kbit/s with 128kbit/s mp3/aac/ac3 audio 75%-85% cpu load

    Other decoders:
    FFMPEG: h.264, mpeg4, divx, plays 720P videos at around 2000kbit/s with 128kbit/s audio - cpu ussage 85%
VLC codec (included with vlc player): h.264, mpeg4, divx, plays 720P videos around 2000kbit/s with 128kbit/s audio -cpu ussage 85%

    Other experiments:
720P flv - only low bitrate ones work.
    1080P h.264 @ 2.5mbps works at 15fps
wmv hd 720P video- 2.5mbps-3mbps works perfectly on AAO and plays at full 24fps or 30fps.

    Tips:
Copy your video to the local hdd before playing the video. Playing through usb devices might lower your frame rates if the video bitrate is too high.
Must have 1gb or more ram unless you have an optimized version of XP.
Plug in your laptop and set the power mode to minimum power management or maximum performance
Turn down the volume and screen brightness. (might sound weird, but the computer sometimes freeze or lags when the sound is at full blast and the screen brightness is at its brightest)

I have a Sanyo Xacti HD1010 and I record my clips at 720p 60fps as I find the video smoother than 1080 30fps

The clips I took in Hong Kong play reasonably well using Media Player Classic Home Cinema, but sometimes the same clip will go into slow motion for a few seconds then catch up when played immediately afterwards. I have the full K-Lite codec pack installed and I have 1GB RAM.

I know the One is only a netbook and I didn’t buy it to play HD footage, but I am going to California in May, so it will be handy to check footage I have taken, so finding the best player is something I need to find out. I have no idea about tweaking codecs etc, so it needs to be the one which plays best with standard settings.

I think I may try VLC & KM Player and see how they perform.
