Hey guys, I'm new to linux, and trying to get my head around the whole thing

    My problem is this:

My Uni has an 802.1x authentication system for its wlan, running on wep encryption using an EAP TTLS protocol.
To access this I figured I need two apps: xsupplicant and NetworkManager.

I've grabbed xsupplicant off the programs list, but cannot seem to pull up it's GUI.
Secondly, I'm not sure if NM app comes with this distro, as I'm not exactly sure what this distro is! Is it based on Fedora 8?
grabbing my wlan certificate from my uni tech aside, I don't know how to proceed.

Any help would be appreciated! I'm thinking it may be easier to swap to ubuntu 8.04.1, as I believe it has some (limited?) built in capabilities for this kind of thing. Unfortunately Linux isn't supported at my uni as yet (It was on the very end of a long list of OS), so I can't get any help from the helkp desk, may have to try tracking down a linux specialist.

I am afraid I cannot help you with this specific problem, but as a general rule, if you want something to work that is non-standard in Linpus, you would be better off installing Ubuntu. It's much better for one thing, but in your case, it also has the very large advantage of being extremely popular so it is very well supported both by Canonical and the Ubuntu community.

Having said that, I probably should point out that at least one person has had difficulties setting up the wireless card in Ubuntu but it does definitely work.

You could try searching/asking on ubuntuforums.org first to see if your setup is supported. I bet it will be (Ubuntu is capable of doing almost anything non-proprietary that a normal person would ever want) and you almost certainly won't be the first person to have enquired.

Yeah in hindsight I agree with you. I have since installed hardy heron, and, after following this guide
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=795984&highlight=ar5001+8.04+madwifi
after a fresh install, wifi is working a treat. The network manager bundled with ubuntu is more than enough to handle my original problem, and whilst i still need to hunt down an SSL certificate for my uni network, the rest is sorted :)
