    Hello,
While trying to get my wife's netbook to connect to my Samba server, I changed the login user name for the netbook from the default "user" to "jo" using

    usermod -l jo user

Which I understand should change just the username and nothing else.
After the next reboot, the machine starts up and then hangs with a black screen and just the white X cursor. I've tried numerous reboots with various key combinations, but it always boots the same. Is there a way of booting the netbook into a terminal so that I can undo the changes?

Your problem is called 'DontVTSwitch', that is an option in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf which prevents you from getting a text-console with ctrl-alt-F1.

I wonder: what does ctrl-alt-backspace do?
In many linuxes that kills the graphical environment ('X-server').

AFAIK 'lilo' is the program that does the booting.
Not sure at all if this applies:

As a last resort: make a bootable usb-stick, it must be a linux one, ( Puppy-Linux ? ), boot, mount ssd, edit, etc.
