I'm happy and proud to announce the release of my own version of Puppy Linux as a portable Music Lab.
Happy owner of an Acer Aspire One (AAO) netbook, I needed some fast & efficient OS that would support the new kind of hardware this "mini laptop" is fitted with. (Wifi, Webcam, internal mic, etc...).
After much tweaking, and lots of help from the Puppy Users Community, I'm glad to release at last: "pupitup v:1.1".
It runs on a 500 MB (or larger) USB stick, or the live CD, and can be installed on HDD as well.
The live CD .iso file can be downloaded for free at:

    http://pupitup.110mb.com/

Hope this will help promoting affordable music composing and editing, and provide AAO users with a neat alternative to the OS included as standard on the AAO.

Quick note: it's hosted at a rogue that wants a signup.

Anybody want to torrent this or host it somewhere else?

Thanks a lot for mirroring it.
It's hard to find free hosting for LARGE files.
I need more time to complete the website, add a forum, etc...
I'm using only puppy since I've found it, and "pupitup" has been build exclusively with puppy on my AAO.
It's not just a music distro, it's got games and skype too.

    Eztuxer,
Could I ask you a couple of questions please?

    - How much of the AAO hardware works normally? When I last tried Puppy it wouldn't load if there was a card in the left-hand expansion slot, plus I wasn't able to get Wifi working at all.
    - For people who don't need a music lab setup, how easy is it to change the desktop and remove unwanted programs?

    Thanks.
    J.

    Hi ! Jaycb,

Good set of questions, I'll try to answer them as best I can.

Wifi works, however I must say that sensitivity is better under linpus lite, i.e: reception level is a bit lower under Pupitup and Puppy 4.1.2 (4.1.1 & 4.1.0 as well) resulting in lower level and signal / noise ratio, thus it can slow transfer rate on more distant connexions.
This is due to the fact that the AAO has dual antennas built in on each side of the screen frame, and limpus, chooses between them for the best result (VHF, UHF, & SHF) signal is very sensitive to reflexions and level can vary if you move the laptop just a few inches or cm, and puppy doesn't have the "secret" Acer driver for this dual antenna management.
But it works fine for me in the garden at about 30 m (100'), and trough a dual pane window (router inside and not even in line with window).
Non essential wifi functions such as OSD wifi on/off state or blinking leds are not working on pupitup, but "blinky" works in taskbar.
The wifi switch works fine, and it's effect can be monitored with "blinky".
Some reports mention random WPA bug, but I don't use it.
Inserting an SD mem card in the left slot works, but must be removed before shutdown, and inserted after boot.
You will find all the latest news about how Craig is working on solving all these minor drawbacks here:
    http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... e59a63891a

Notice that Aspire One Puppy uses now puppy 4.1.0 and 2.6.27 kernel.
Pupitup uses Puppy 4.1.2 and 2.6.25 kernel.
So if most of what lies in that long thread applies to pupitup, all doesn't.

Removing unwanted soft is NOT easy at all, but since pupitup is only 330 MB (installed), and runs entirely in RAM, it boots and runs fast anyway.
Installing soft is a breeze with .pet installer.

All the rest is working fine/better than with linpus:

    Webcam: OK
    Internal Mike: OK
    Screen resolution: OK
    Battery monitoring: OK
My puppy runs of USB stick (500MB and larger), so I'm done with crazy HDD parking rattling noises. :)
I don't have excessive CPU resources usage, or battery energy consumption, and the fan noise is "normal".

Add to this the stability of puppy, and you'll understand why for more than two months, the only times I accidentally run linpus, is when I'm too slow at hitting "F12" to boot on USB.

So my benchmark rating is in favor of Puppy, those minor kinks, are much less frustrating than the absence of CD/DVD burner, other format partition access with thunar, the inability to install certain softs on linpus, etc... etc...

I wish Acer was as good at fixing persisting vanishing BIOS problem, as the puppy team if helpful to tweak this AAO.
Not to mention that I had to force open my new AAO to upgrade RAM to 1.5 GB...
Not too smart, Acer lab geeks, not too f&@#§%g smart.

Thanks for a comprehensive reply Eztuxer .
I shall lurk around the puppy forum and await Craig's progress.
    Cheers.

I have to say that I love the idea of this distro.
I have blogged about it at http://www.sleepywhisper.com and I will write a full review once I have had a chance to give it a good run.

Yay, I got it, thanks! I'm excited to run LMMS. Hopefully I can get my USB MIDI controller going with it; notes to follow hopefully this weekend.

Great ! let me know about how you it get done with this USB midi connexion.
i am going to Buy an USB cable myself next week, to connect to my Yamaha keyboard.
Midi instrument input/output is supported on LMMS & also on Amuc & Musescore.
Please also report on how Pupitup runs on your particular computer config (wifi, wep, wpa ?, etc...), and if you run it on other computers than your AAO.

OK, got the MIDI controller going.

I didn't have to do much, just start jack with saner settings (44.1 kHz at 16 bits, unchecked realtime), run lmms, and choose the interface from the MIDI input settings. ALSA had found and installed it as soon as I plugged it in. This is an old MK evolution 225 49-key controller, but M-audio still puts it out under a different name.

Now, getting smooth sound out of it is something else. I'm going to try running it from the SSD instead of from RAM loaded from the USB key, and fiddle with jack's settings after doing a little reading.
