I have slowly worked out that I can use a terminal window to install VLC and I am using the sudo command to do so but apparently I am missing a number of "dependencys" such as libpulse.so.0(pulse_0). I tried to find and d/l one of these, only to be told that I am not root and I don't have the password to log in as root. How do I deal with this - words of one syllable please.

    Hi alcartwright

The root password is the one you created when you set up your One initially.
If you cannot remember it look at the following link to set a new one.
