You have a point. The first computer I ever owned (and built from a kit) was a Sinclair ZX81. Best, most memorable computer I ever owned.

I started with the Jornasa 720....or was it the 710...dinky keybd hard wire modem that really worked! nice bit of kit both me and my wife had one. The psion 620x OR 650? looked very cool. Have you seen the HP mini note? very nice....but expensive  I might keep my eye on it...what with all the netbooks being sold..... watch the price of this drop like a stone

Yesterday, specialized stores in Paris were selling the A110 for 260€, maybe the price drop will at last begin... And I bought it 289€ just a few days earlier.

I bought mine in Thailand (Bangkok).

    9900 Baht (~$295USD) for the 512MB/8gb SSD w/Linux.

    17000 Baht (~$500USD) for 1GB/120GB HDD w/XP or Linux.

I got the cheaper one.

They charge what they think they can get. Do we have more competition here?

It's not that hard to figure out why there is significant price difference in the US versus many other countries if you look at the cost in US Dollars. The US Dollar is very weak around the world. $349 US Dollars is a reasonable price in the US but $349 US Dollars in Euros would be 243 Euros, an absurdly low price for the Aspire One in Europe. (Remember the Dollar and Euro used to be equal value. Now 1 Euro is $1.43 US Dollars.)

That argument doesn't hold... normally when the currency takes a dip (becomes less valuable) things become more expensive, not the other way around.

If Acer is able to sell this low here, then yeah, they're making a nice profit elsewhere. They probably know that U.S. residents aren't going to buy anything real expensive right now. We're all too broke ;) But in general I think it has to do with us having a lot of options, lower cost options, for a long time, and they have to price it to be competitive. They've done a great job IMO :D

Well of course supply and demand plays a role too. If Acer knows they can sell the Aspire One for 349 Euros in Europe that's what they will sell it for. If they sold the Aspire for 349 Euros in the US (which is $500 in the US) they wouldn't sell.
As I said there's no way Acer will sell the Aspire One for $349 US Dollars in Europe. That's way too cheap.

Maybe this will make it more clear:
If the exchange rate differential was reversed and the Euro was weak and the dollar was strong, it would be like us complaining that we have to spend $349 for the Aspire One instead of the $243 people in Europe pay. But the people in Europe would be saying "Why are you complaining, we pay 349 Euros!"

I'm from Brazil, and here Acer don't sell the AAO yet.
So, I buy the mine in Paraguay (I live near this country), and I paid U$440,00 for an AAO110! :x
But, I still happy, because the Brazil have the most expensive tax rates on the world, and following the Asus example, I think that the AAO will cost R$1299,00 = U$ 765,00, believe or not...

I think it has more to do with purchasing power, ie what people can afford, which influences supply and demand. A lot of south east asian countries have the aspire one at the same prices or lower than that in the US.

Case in point, when I bought my Linpus AAO in Malaysia, it was the same price as the US model if you include things like tax, BUT it had 1GB or ram instead of the usual 512. And that was an Acer decision for Malaysia because people in Malaysia like to buy acer products without Windows preinstalled.

In Thailand I believe it was even cheaper, but in Singapore which has relatively a much higher income per capita the price was almost $500 US.

Maybe, the price issue -i'm not very sure- is because the US market is much more big than in any other country and the adquisitive power is bigger, maybe it's because companies want to profit more of other countries, maybe it's taxes or something like that... Or maybe they're just evil

I got mine at the bargtastic price of £148 from Tesco! They'd mispriced the Linux hdd version £50 cheaper than the ssd version at £198, heheh. Complete on the spot impulse buy, very satisfied.

    Cheers.

I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the label. I'm usually the kind of person who finds out 2 days late that Argos or Amazon have misspriced a game/gadget for peanuts or released it a week early, heh!

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to say...

I am ecstatic over the price of my acer

    1Gb/120GB linux for £215

I want to commend acer and asus for bringing us the netbooks at a price that the people want, rather than the heavy overpowered desktop replacements that other manufacturers offer, who are now having to play catchup

    Brill product, great price
