I really like my new Acer Aspire one, however, it seems a little noisey. Is this normal ? I'm use to working with a larger laptop that hardly makes any sound at all. I haven't found any problems with the computer and I just want to make sure its ok. Maybe I'm just oversensitive to the sound but I haven't noticed any forum posts addressing the issue... What do other users think ???

    Cheers

Other users think you may have omitted to search the forums before starting yet another 'noisy' thread.

The problem is fan noise: do the search for 'noisy fan' and you will find acres of discussion and various solutions.

Thank you... I found the link under noisey fan.... I didn't notice the noise the first few times I booted up but now its becoming more noticeable.. From what I gather not all Aspire ones have this problem.. One poster estimates about 20% of the computers have noisey fans... I guess I should send it back... Thoughts ?

I'm running the acerfand fan control on mine; the fan kicks in so rarely I've effectively got a silent AAO unless I'm doing something processor intensive (it comes in more if I'm charging it while running it). People have expressed concern over possible overheating, but I'm running m ine 10C below the acerfand default settings and reckon I should be on the safe side!

daldred, Have you found the fan to be noisier when run on AC power supply as opposed to battery ? I have XP w/ 1 gig Ram and with 6 cell battery.. Are you fairly certain by adjusting the fan setting that your computer will still be cool enough ?

The fan appears much the same whatever power supply its on - it's just that it runs more when on mains power (I assume that the charging of the battery generates some heat).

The laptop itself remains fairly cool to the touch, and there has been no sign of any instability, so I reckon it's working within its safe parameters.

The people who did all the work to develop the acerfand control system identified that the fan cuts in at 70C anyway, even if it's been set to a temperature higher than that, so there seems to be a failsafe in there somewhere. I have it set up to turn on the fan at 60C and off again at 50C: in my regular use on battery (browsing, office software, a little web development) it rarely switches on.

I usually set my fan on at 70-75C and off at 60-65C, so far there hasn't been any problem with the computer.
The intel processor and chipset are rated to operate at more than 90C so i wouldn't worry about it being overheated. Even if it did overheat, it wouldn't damage the processor or the chipset since they automatically throttles down the clockspeed once it reached critical temperature.

The reason why the laptop is hotter when pluged in is because the powersupply is generating more heat when it's converting power for the laptop and charging the battery.
