    1) On step 8, is that the picture of the LCD backing case? What I mean, is that the picture of the back once you have taken off the LCD screen (step 6)?

2)STEP 9: What is that a picture of?Is that the back of the screen too after you have taken the original screen off? Will we see a camera connector like the one in the picture?

    3) After I finish with putting the LCD touch screen do I just reconnect the microphone connectors that I took off on STEP 7?

    4) The little wire that sticks out from the LCD touch screen, do I connect that to the TOUCH-HUB CONTROLLER BOARD?

    tHANKS for the help guys!

    1) yes on step 8 that is showing the LCD removed from the lid. it is showing you that you must plug that wire into the webcam and run in back to the controller board to plug into one of the usb slots. it shows the wire going diagonally because it is barely long enough so you must take the most direct route. there is plenty of room behind the LCD for the wire as Acer runs wires there too.

    2) What you are seeing in step 9 is the back of the LCD screen. when you unmounted it by removing the webcam and mic plugs, then removing the screws, you cannot simply take the LCD off because it is still attached to the motherboard with a ribbon cable so instead you just let it fold down onto the keyboard. So if you did that and then looked at the keyboard area you would be looking at the back of the LCD but upside down. what they want you to do is move the plug you undid from the webcam to stick out from behind the left hand side of the LCD BUT keeping the mic plug in the same spot. the wire is double sided taped to the LCD so after I moved it i taped it all in place with masking tape so it would not move around.

    3) yes after the LCD is back in place reconnect the mic plug as normal.

    4) yes the touch screen has a flat cable coming from it, and the controller board has a connector hard wired to it. run the wire from the controller through the hinge area (and under the metal hinge. just loosen it and shove'em under) and plug it into the screen. it doesn't matter which way you plug it in, the connector works in either direction.

4**) The instructions say to hide the LCD connector at the bottom of the LCD, that is a small area and its hard to fit so I suggest moving it to the right side of the LCD, like I did. plenty of room, all the cables reach and no problems closing the case back up.

Always willing to help, just let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks mcmasterp.

In an earlier post, you stated that there are 2 extra wires. Is this the 2 USB Harnesses? In the little pamplet picture, is it the #3 and #4 harnesses?

This looks realy interessting...hope they will have soon new packages avaiable :D

But first, I have a few questions:

    1) What about Mac OS X? Has anyone tried the Drivers for this? Will they work?
    2) Battery Life - I know it will go down if I plug in Bluetooth, TV, etc...but without that, so the new USB-Plugs are unused?
    3) I've also heard that the Webcam won't work after the Install...true or not?
    4) Is realy no soldering required? I only have to open the One, and that's it, nearly?
    5) Are there realy 2 new USB-Ports? This would be awesome :)

So, I would be very happy if someone can answer me this. many Thanks in Advance!

does anyone have a clue what those connectors that the camera uses are called? I am not interested in a touchscreen so I would like to make my own solderless usb hub. I just need to find a supplier for those plugs. But I have no idea what they are called.

    1) mac drivers are included, and I uploaded them to the downloads section here if you want a closer look.

    2) battery life actually didn't change, I thought it would but hey.

    3) webcam works

    4) yup two extra usb ports! i use one for bluetooth and I'm searching for ideas for the second one. maybe biometrics, or tv tuner, but case modds scare me.

the usb port that the webcam plugs into is the one you will be plugging the controller/hub into, it is 2.0. the controller/hub, has three availbe ports (the forth is hardwired to the screen connector) all are 2.0, you plug the webcam into one of them

That's really cool about the touch screen not changing battery life.
I might be tempted to try it... Thanks for this useful thread !

how does the touchscreen affect the visibility of the lcd screen? there's a user review on engadget.com that says it becomes slightly grainy with the touchscreen installed. anyone notice any visible differences with the touchscreen installed?

    Hi there,

I received my kit a couple of days ago, started to install it last night and just completed a few moments ago.
Well...completed....may not be the right word.

With everything back in place, except the screen bezel, I booted it up in Mac OS, installed the driver and played with it for a while. It was fantastic, working just fine.
So I powered it down to put the screen bezel back in place. I didnt force anything in any way, took my time...
    Then powered it back up...
...and the screen does not work anymore.
At first the image was bad and seemed terribly slow, then nothing. The backlight does work fine, but the image is broken.
I took the AA1 apart again, inspected everything, and I cant find anything wrong, except the screen shows virtually nothing.
Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Can it be fixed? I'm desperate tonight. It all looked fantastic, then it died :(
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I installed the non-soldering board a week ago. Still no cracks in the screen, so I’m happy. The mod was not hard to do for someone with patience and a pair of tweezers. Leading the wires through the hinges was the most difficult part.

I’m now looking for applications, themes and add-ons to support the touchscreen. Touchscreeners, have a look at www.symbaloo.com, a starting page with bookmarks behind blocks, it looks like the iPhone. Really sleek if you combine it with the royale noir winxp theme.

Suggestions anyone, for more touchscreen savvy apps??

Hey McMasterP, please tell me how to get wider scroll bars etc. and if you have also other suggestions to make XP more fingertouch savvy.

    Thanks!

Someone asked about the brightness of the screen: the touchpanel has a plastic outer layer which is a little grainy, like the older lcd screens. I like it; it takes up up much less dust and finger grease than the original bright lcd screen. It also shines al lot less than the AAO screen panel.

Sure. the scroll bars are in - Control panel>Display>Appearance then click the advanced tab. pick scrollbar from the dropdown and adjust the size. I picked 26. also look at icon spacing and active title bar.

If I understand you correctly, the LCD not the touchscreen is what isn't working anymore. Assuming that I would check the ribbon cable going from motherboard to LCD. Look for cracks or tears. also check the connector end at the motherboard to be sure it is plugged in all the way. And check around the hinge for stress. Let me know how that all looks. I've taken mine apart 6 times since the touchscreen upgrade without issues so it does seems strange. Did you heed the warnings about over tightening the frame screws?

Some ideas for making your aspire one with XP more touchscreen friendly.

    1) Adjust the scroll bar and title bar sizes under the display control panel.

    2) Use Firefox and download the "Grab and Drag" addon.

    3) use Thunderbird and download the "Grab and Drag" addon

    4) use large fonts and icons under the display control panel

    5) I don't know what else. you tell me please!!

yo mcmasterp, how long is the stylus that comes with the touchscreen? any awkwardness from using it extended periods with your hand hovering over the keyboard?

when i first heard of a touchscreen i thought it was a hokey and silly idea, but i'm beginning to think of some good uses for it.

Another thing for people to check out.

It is very important that you dont over tighten the screws on the frame after you install the touchscreen. The instruction warn about it causing the screen to crack but even a little over tight will cause the mouse to jump to the edge when the frame is squeezed (like when opening or closing the laptop). test by lightly squeezing all around the frame and watch for the cursor to jump, if it does just loosen the screw closest to where it jumped to.
