The stylus is the size of a regular clicky pen. it is actually both a black pen and a stylus with a nifty way of switching between. hold it one way and click and you get a stylus, flip the pen over a click and you get a pen! very cool. I actually use it for my pocket pc more tan for the acer but it still has good uses like signing documents.

I'm using the touchscreen for a week now. I'm a lefty, so I have the stylus in my left hand. I use the stylus and both my hands on the screen and on the touch pad. RSI days are over now with so many ways to manipulate the PC. Oh, I totally forgot the keyboard; I use the shortcuts too.

In my experience, working the menus with the stylus on the screen is so much faster and more intuitive than the touchpad. If you lean the ouside of your hand on the palmrest, you can easily reach the whole screen with the stylus. When working at the top of the screen for longer periods, I hang my little finger over the top edge of the screen.

Yes, that is correct, the LCD does not work anymore. When the problem started I could barely see the Acer bios banner and boot menu, and minutes later it was not displaying anything at all. The LED backlight lights up, the AA1 boots just fine, the screen flickers when Ubuntu switches to high resolution, then the screen gradually becomes kind of white, then some vertical bars appear in the middle of the image, but nothing more.
I checked and checked and triple checked again all connections, the cables and everything, but I dont see anything obvious, it just looks good to me, nothing broken, nothing bent, nothing disconnected. No cracks or tears or anything, it just wont work anymore.
Also I really dont think I over tightened the screws, although it is the only bad move I can think of. But then again, there is nothing cracked or bent, and I would assume that first thing to break would be the touchscreen...
Other thing I thought, there may have been some unwanted pressure at the back of the LCD due to the rerouting of the camera harness, but even that seems unlikely because I dont see why it would kill the LCD and it looks like there is some extra room between the LCD and the housing. Furthermore, while the bezel applies pressure on the sides, I dont think it has much impact on the back, and the 4 screws that hold the panel in place were already tighten when it was still working...
The trouble now is I dont know what is broken, so I dont know what to replace. The full panel? Just the harness and connectors? The full AA1? I am actually strongly considering buying another AA1 and sell as much as I can of the parts of the dead one, so as to prevent this project from hitting the Macbook price tag...

I was thinking about doing that, but why would it make any difference: the case is open, the screen unscrewed, so no pressure on anything, and still exact same behavior.
Anyway, I'll give it a try, and will most likely get a new one tomorrow if I cant fix it by today...

Martin, from what you describe of how the screen behaves, I make out that the LCD itself is fine. My old 1999 Compaq Armada behaves the same. It's the flat cable being loose on one or both ends or being damaged. I repair the Compaq by squeezing on the bottom left side of the bezel, where the cable is. Then it works fine again for a while. If I were you, I would open the AAO again and check the flat connector of the LCD. The flat cable may be half in the connector or sideways. And be very careful when closing everything again, check if you don't press on the flat cable somewhere. I found the routing through the hinges quite precarious.

Sorry to hear that your touchscreen broke. It will still work, I've read on the EEEPC board, where many guys break the touchscreen. It won't work around the broken areas, they say there.
    Good luck.

solman, dont feel bad, I was really going to try & remove the touchscreen, not only because of your suggestion.
I must have used too much tape to secure it, so I used a bit too much force to remove and cracked it just a few millimeters on the right side. Nothing major as long as it still works.

MichelC, I think like you, but I dont see anything wrong with the cable. The AA1 is mostly dismantled until I find what is wrong, so I tried to move squeeze shake the cable and connectors but with no result at all. I guess I'll try again today...

    Thanks for your help anyway

    Martin,

Hopefully you are aware of the no-go-don't-touch area on the bottom back of the LCD. Here is the row of tine connectors to the sectors of the LCD. Perhaps you squeezed a cable onto this area. With a magnifying glass you may find a broken flatcable. But still, if the LCD shows what it must at startup, and fades after that... it looks like the LCD still works.

Best of luck finding the fault and repairing it.
And not to poke you in the eyes, but I'm still very happy with my touchscreen. But I also found when doing the mod that the AAO is not really meant to dismantle every week. I damaged the tabs that hold the keyboard; I think one more time taking the keyboard off and I break the tabs completely. I did a memory upgrade at the same time as the touchscreen, and that's it. I have 3.5G with Joikuspot on my mobile phone and I don't see what else I need.

I did a lot of XP tweaks to spead up the AAO considerably, but the power consumption got up a bit. It may also be that the XP fan regulator is different from the Linpus fan regulator. B.t.w., I'm glad I got rid of linux. It feels like coming home now I have XP on it.

    Anyway, good luck.

    Hi,

is it possible to get one of these solderless Touch Screen Kits in a normal online shop? I've never been on eBay and ordered something, now have my doubts.
I also readed something, that multi-touch solutions soon on the market.

Is these touch screen solution good for writing? For example, math functions or transcripts in MS OneNote?

I purchased this kit off of eBay and installed it. It works quite well under Windows XP and Linpus Lite.

However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it working under Ubuntu 8.10. I've gotten as far as pressing on the screen will click on whatever the cursor is hovering on, but that's about it. When I try to run TouchKit, I get "No Touch Controller Found". I even compiled tkusb.ko from the Driver source that came on the CD. Am I missing a step or three? Any help would be appreciated and I'm experienced with linux and so am happy to hack things like xorg.conf or whatever if that's what it takes.

I think you have to update your xorg.conf to use the touchscreen driver instead of your mouse .. dunno how to do that, but I'd say you're on the right path with the xorg.conf ..

    Pete,
I hope you didn't damage the tiny pins inside the white USB connectors. I'm not sure, but I think they can be used only with the plug one way into the connector.

Sorry, I can't help you with Linpus; I'm a linux nitwit and after three weeks of struggling with Linpus, I switched to a lean and fast XP. Actually, it's fun to learn how to speed up Windows. Touchscreen, internal Bluetooth, with XP it's much easier for me than Linpus. I've more than 3 Gb of free space on the SSD, and that's more than I had free with Linpus.

I'm not suggesting you to switch to XP.....but if you're a linux nono... it might be wise.

Good luck with getting it all to work.
