loving my touch screen and stuff, just a quick question, tried searching but its a wierd question so it was hard to find if anyone asked already. on my touchpad, i can no longer left or right click using the buttons. (not that i need it now with the pen) but you know, muscle memory, or lost my stylus or arm got tired(i dunno), the option to use those buttons would be nice.

anyone have this issue or am i alone?

I can only speak for myself, but I triple boot between WinXP Home, Linpus, and Ubuntu 8.10 and the touchscreen works fine using the drivers off the CD and following the installation instructions. The only one I had to deviate from the instructions was with Ubuntu, but WinXP and Linpus worked right away. Both of my touchpad buttons work as well. I would suggest checking the touchpad connector to the motherboard to ensure that the ribbon cable is inserted correctly and not at an angle or something like that; perhaps this is a hardware issue introduced after re-assembly.

Yours didn't come with the cd? DId you order from fidohub? As far as your problem goes, I have no idea. Make sure you didn't screw on the screen too tight. 'causes cracks etc..also double check the video card is plugged in correctly.

Apparently there's some bug on the site where some orders aren't charged for shipping.. Anyways, 2 weeks later I got an email from fidohub clearing the problem up and I'll be throwing the touchscreen and bluetooth in in a few days hopefully.

Wish me luck.. I'll probably need it

can someone tell me if it matters how the ribbon cable plugs into the controller wire
and maybe which side the ribbon cable should go on for the ebay easy and fun touchkit

    thank you

For me personally, I'm not sure. I did try both ways; one way made the screen seem reversed (i.e. touch the lower left of the touch screen, the pointer goes to the upper right of the touch screen) and it was very consistent; almost perfect if not for the fact that everything was reversed and inverted, but there wasn't enough cable for me to install the screen the proper way (i.e. flipping it around and inverting it). Reversing the cable made the pointer congregate in the centre no matter where you touched it, but after calibration, everything seemed fine.

So my theory is that it doesn't matter which way the cable goes in because when you calibrate the screen using the included software, it'll all work itself out. However, I am curious myself if there is a proper way to insert the ribbon cable.

zachary.berrier, If you still are without a cd please shoot me a pm. I will go ahead and create an .iso file and figure out a way you can download it.

Also to everyone who said no instructions were included (they are a pdf on the cd).

Finally the big thing to double know is that when installing the touch screen kit on the new Acer A1 with builtin 3g (qualcomm gobi) there isnt really any room to actually fit the controller. That being said I pretty much squeezed everything in (everything being the controller and bluetooth being installed internally). Now I am italian so I installed this the only way I know how (aka force things into place and cover it all with electric tape). It is working like a champ although occasionally it unplugs and then replugs and a little force on the keyboard makes it work again. I may have to open it back up to figure out what exactly is the problem.

If I do I will take some pictures to document the differences internally between the typical AA1 and the 3g AA1. Also the drivers for Win 7 are pretty iffy and it doesn't formerly recognize that there is a touchscreen installed. However the touchscreen can be configured and calibrated within Windows XP and although Win 7 claims no touchscreen device is installed it certainly works correctly. I am going to try later to reconfigure the driver and see if that makes the difference (I think it installed itself as a mouse and not a touchscreen.

    Enough detail for now!

I figured out the problem with my touchpad. I can see that 2 of the connectors on the cable are broken, bent the other way. So I guess the pad is screwed.

Now I finally got my touch screen working and it works great! Too bad I broke my WLAN antenna cable in the process, so now I'm offline... It also seems like the battery/power sensors stopped working, it has stopped showing battery status, always showing it as connected to cable.

This project was fun the first couple of hours, now it's not so fun anymore. It definitely wasn't worth it when I look at all the time and money I've spent. The big problem for me was the routing of the cables through the right hinge. It is REALLY hard, I think. Also, it is really easy to break things inside this machine, so this is not something that anyone should do. People like me should stay off :)

    Hi all,

I got the Fun & Easy kit from ebay and have installed it but I had troubles along the way. And it is neither easy nor fun! :(

The major problem was that the wires that lead to the touch screen broke at the point they are soldered to the usb hub board - there is no strain relief at all. I put them back as I remembered but of course there are two red wires and two black wires.

Anyway, calibration seems to be the problem I'm having:-

    1. On X start-up the cursors goes and parks itself in the top left-hand corner of the screen.

    2. TKCal does not wait for the first touch point press but shows a rotating timer in the bottom left-hand and then automatically proceeds to the bottom right-hand calibration point where it waits forever.

I suspect this could be me getting the wiring wrong. At first I thought it may be a trapped touchscreen but removing the screen bezel does not help.

Does anybody who has done the mod know the correct wiring between the USB hub and the touchscreen panel?

    Many thanks

    Dr D.

Stupid question, but during calibration, you are indeed touching (and holding) down on the spot (i.e. the rotating timer, which is really the spot where you're supposed to touch the screen with your finger or stylus) until it moves to the next position, right? And then you touch that point, hold, and then wait for it to move the next spot and repeat, right?

Many thanks for the reply rtiangha!

Yep, I guessed that touching each target in turn is what I'm meant to do, but it's like there is already something pushing on the touchscreen before I start. The first point immediately turns to a timer before I get chance to touch the screen with my stylus. My guess is that I have reconnected the broken wires to the touchscreen incorrectly.

Any ideas what the correct wiring is supposed to be between the circuit board and the 4 way socket that connects to the touchscreen? There are two reds and two blacks that go onto the circuit board.

    Thankyou

    Dr D.

Well I'm making progress now. I took out my soldering iron and swapped over a red and a black wire and voila: calibrate now works correctly! I did a nine point calibration as root and it wrote the file

    /var/lib/eeti.param

I can use the command "TKCal /dev/hiddev0 draw" and can draw at the correct scale on the screen.

However, using the touchscreen in normal linux applications results in the cursor only covering about half the screen area even when the screen is touched at the extremities. This is some kind of scaling problem between the touchscreen and X.

Once again, has anybody got any idea what silly mistake I'm making this time?

    Many thanks

    Dr. D.

Well I've cracked it. (not literally the screen, the scaling problem).

It seems that you need the line

    Code:
    Option "AutoMapping" "0"
in the xorg.conf file in the Input Device section. I now have a working touchscreen. Of course my Lithium tremor makes using the damn thing pretty difficult...

    Thanks for all the help

Got the touch screen  built it in, everything works perfectly :D
one little drawback, I guess I damaged the webcam cable just like more of you did, because my webcam does not work anymore..
Really don't want to take it all apart again to check where the cable is pinched (I guess at the hinge)

Acer Aspire One Easy & Fun Solderless Touch Screen KIT...

Nothing easy, fun or solderless about putting this kit in.. got it all together the first time and the touch screen didn't work at all.. opened it back up again and 3 wires were pulled off of the usb controller >.<

But hey on the upside I did learn how to solder! redid all four points and threw it back in and it's AWESOME! really enjoy it even though my webcam bit the dust lol

Question though: Looking at videos like jkkmobile's one and random ones on youtube for this kit.. where do you get the software to scroll like you would on a touchscreen phone like they do in the videos?

Also, someone made mention of a cool homepage for touchscreen computers somewhere around these touchscreen posts.. been searching but can't find it in the forums.. anyone know what that site was off the top of their heads?
