Acer aspire one Freezes on startup Win XP

    I have a Windows XP installed on my acer netbook and after doing a recent up on firefox my netbook freezes once i start up into windows...i can move the cursor, but i cant click on an icons nor goto task manager...this happens all the time now and when i try going into safe mode the same thing happens again...i want to format it but i need to get my files back so can anyone suggest a solution to my problem
