    Dear all,
Was wondering if anyone could help. I have a 4 month old Acer Aspire One 10.1" with Windows 7.

For some reason it switches itself off completely at randoml. This tends to happen mostly when I use the web cam or stream video.

Has anyone got any potential solutions to this, before I start knocking on Acer's door?

Please bare in mind that I am a complete beginner and do not know my way around the laptop too well, so please try to explain in simple terms.

Thanks guys, I hope you can help.

randomly shutting off is never good.
if its doing it ONLY when you use the webcam, video, it could be some sort of very odd driver issue.
Im more likely to think you have a hardware issue, and you need to call Acer. Especially if you are a beginner like you say you are.
Your netbook comes with a 1-year warranty.

    Tried the latest BIOS?

Win7 has this anoying thing where it doesn't play well with netbook batteries. Updating the BIOS is the permanent fix, the temporary fix is to disable the battery in device manager.

My D250 suffered from this until a BIOS update. Until then it was randomly suspending, shutting down hard, and saying my battery was completely fubar'd n needed replacement.

    totally forgot about that update.
check the version of your bios by pressing F2 at start up and the version will be at the top. get the latest version from acer.com

My Acer Apire One 150 also had the well known 'battery not charging' problem, so I installed the BIOS 3310 update. Now I wish I hadn't done that, because my netbook is TOTALLY dead, I can't switch it on, no ligths, nothing at all... I've been looking for a solution for this all over the internet, but I haven't found anything about a dead one :s
this really sucks, and I was wondering if anybody knows what I mean and has any suggestions...

    thanks

    @ rebecca

Sounds like your BIOS update went wrong, either the wrong image, power outage or something along those lines. You're not the only one, heaps of people here have had that issue. You need to "blind flash" the BIOS again. If your machine is completely bricked, you may need to replace the BIOS chip, or have it replaced.

but how do i blind flash if it doesn't respond to anything?
I'm going to have it repaired, because I've tried everything and it doesn't come back to live :(

I assume you have the D150.

    1. Save ROM file (file name: JAL90x64.fd) to the root directory of USB storage.
    2. Plug USB storage into USB port.
    3. Press Fn + ESC button then plug in AC.
    The Power button flashes once.
    4. Press Power button to initiate system CRISIS mode.
When CRISIS is complete, the system auto restarts with a workable BIOS.
    5. Update the latest version BIOS for this machine by regular BIOS flashing process.

Cant remember if you need to format the usb drive as FAT or FAT32, so try both. (Im more inclined to say FAT).
If it doesn't work, and your system is still under 1 year old, you can get it fixed for free (you pay shipping) by contacting acer.
