Just bought the Acer Aspire One (from Amazon, USA) and also Targus external CD/DVD driver (model PADVD010U).

I keep getting a pop-up on the net-computer to create Acer back-up disks. When I plug in the Targus and input a blank DVD disk, the green light on the front of the Targus just keep blinking. The notice on the Acer screen is stating it cannot find optical drive.
Does anyone know what might be wrong.
Does anyone else use a Targus drive with their net-notebook?
I put in a few different blank DVD+R, CD-R; and green light just keeps blinking.

I tried to play a movie for my grandson and the screen said:l Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible decodeer is not installed on your computer. What does this mean? I can't play DVDs?

Does anyone know what might be wrong with the darn thing?

That model is showing on amazon as just an external rom drive. No writing ability.

are you sure it is a recordable drive? do you see the logos with "recordable" on the bezel of the drive?

Try using the WinDVD that came with the One to watch DVD movie with.

"are you sure it is a recordable drive? do you see the logos with "recordable" on the bezel of the drive?"

Correct, the external DVD/CD drive is only for PLAY. Cannot record. I wonder why then the Acer pop-up keeps saying to "back up operating system" onto disks, when no CD/DVD player is installed on this 10'1" Acer Aspire One?

"Try using the WinDVD that came with the One to watch DVD movie with."
What do you mean? The only Media Player on this Acer is a Miscrosoft Media Player 9. When I input a DVD movie, and try to play in Meida Player 9, I get that message about "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because compatible decoder is not installed on this computer."
Does that mean the Media Player of the Acer net-notebook doesn't have the decoder?
Should I install another (FREE) VLR or Power DVD player (which might have a decoder)?

Windows Media player has no DVD encoder. You need to install some DVD software, like power DVD or WinDVD, and that will install the decoder allowing you to watch a DVD in Windows Media Player.

As for the DVD's, I assume Acer went the cheap route with the new 10" models and ask you to burn your own recovery cd's rather than including them with the computer. Most brands do that now to save a few bucks. You should have the option to have it not remind you again, and you could call Acer and request they mail you the recovery disc free of charge.

Installing the K-Lite Codec pack with Media Player classic should give you the DVD decoder. Try that.

    Hey Goofball...

I like your handle although I thought that was my job (goofing off). I DL the K-Lite Codec pack and when I went to install it, it said it would be deleting any present codecs during the installation. So, I cancelled out for the moment as my "One" is running great. If I created a new system restore point before installing this program and then I had problems with K-Lite, would a system restore return any previous codecs?

what codecs are you running now? If your system is good, no need to install a codec pack. You can try another media player like VLC or Media Player Classic if you're still running Windows Media Player.

Called Acer Tech Support and they were quite adamant "If you want us to send you the recovery disc, there will be a charge."
I told them to forget about it.
I am just mentioning this in case someone else intends to purchase the AAO.
Someone suggested using Power DVD or Acer Arcase to play DVD movies. Can't find DVD Power or Acer Arcade on the computer. Someone said to check Recovery Disk. I don't have Recovery Disk, as I said. (We wanted to make sure our grandson could play his DVD movies ont he AAO.) We'll have to see about VLR. This is really causing a lot ot time and troulbe when Acer could have just enclosed a Recovery Disk (or sent one for FREE). It seems studpid to have a pop-up stating to Create Recovery CD when there is no disk drive installed!
I will never buy another Acer computer!
Someone said we could save to a external flash player (we have 2GB Flashdrive), but when we click on the "Create Acer Recovery Disk," it states it can only save to optical disk (?). There is no other category to save to.
(We are senior citizens living on a small monthly income and had to save for quite a long time to buy this Acer Aspire One 10.1" WinXP sp3 for our grandson's birthday. That is why we couldn't buy an additional write/read external CD/DVD player. Therefore we couldn't create a Recovery Disk every time the little Black Box pops-up on the screen reading "Create Acer Recovery Disk(s)"
