In the latest chapter of the escalating rivalry between Google and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT-Q21.540.140.65%) , Acer, the world's third-largest PC maker, said it will begin selling a slimmed-down laptop computer, or netbook, that will run on Google's Android operating system. The Android laptop will be available by the third quarter of this year.

Acer can't do what Asus did, because they're not in the same position. Asus showed an engineering prototype - in fact they showed a bunch of them - there was press interest and they damped it down. That happens a lot if an engineering prototype gets interest - most are not meant for production.

The situation with Acer is very different: they've announced that they'll be shipping in just months. That means they'll already have signed contracts, allocated production line time, and started hussling for orders. And, of course, they will have majorly annoyed MS.

The two situations are as unlike as woman telling you she doesn't want a cup of coffee and her canceling the wedding.
