I had had a crap Advent laptop computer for just under a year as my main PC. Bought it in March, by November it was overheating so much that it could no longer make an XP install without shutting down in the middle of the process!...

After comparing laptops in magazines and the web I found out that Acer had the best value in terms of quality, spec, price and looks put together. I do have the AA1, but the fact that I am going for an Acer for my main PC is a complete coincidence!

I have an Aspire 6530 bought £529 from Comet and for the price I get a 2ghz dual core processor, 4gb of RAM, 250gb hdd, blu-ray drive, 512mb dedicated graphics, 5.1 surround sound, 16" widescreen screen, 4 usb ports, wireless b/g/n, gigabit LAN, 6-in-1 card reader. And it looks excessively good too!
There is no way you can get a PC with that high a spec for less than £850 with other makes.

So.. I warmly recommend Acer for your next desktop replacement laptop!

My dad had an aspire 1610 (bought several years ago) that had the hinges seize up and eventually break off from the screen. Apparently quite a few people had this problem with certain models. It may be that they have switched suppliers for their hinges by now but I guess you can't expect an inexpensive computer to last forever anyway.

Myself, I just like the AA1, I'd rather get a desktop from another manufacturer.
    But that's only me.

I wouldn't buy a desktop from any manufacturer, I'd build one!
