On my acer aspire one it came with XP; a recovery partition and the main running partition, are you able to buy a student upgrade or is it a retail? I also boosted the ram to 2 Gigs. I think the answer is that you can use a recovery from the install DVD, but I don't think the install will overwrite the XP recovery Partition. I am not certain about the all recovery possibilities, but any recovery is a overwrite a fresh install anyway so as long as you have a install disc your okay. If your doing a upgrade which you can purchase cheaper with a single computer install, and you just do a fresh install with a wiped HD your key will only work with help from the W7 tech team. Theoretically the home version W7 can upgrade the XP but then you have a unusable recovery that is still XP mine was 7 Gigs, if the upgrade works.

Edit: So since you own a licensed copy of XP you can buy a upgrade and if you are a student you can get it for 29$ unti jan/3/2010
