Add/Remove Software utility will not open!

    Hi there, newbie here.

    I'm quickly getting to grips with linux, and i've found some really helpful hints on this board (particularly the switch acer <-> xfce desktop mod). However, in all my tinkering, i think i might have buggered my installer. Typing 'yum install X' in terminal produces nothing but a blank line, and after typing in my root password to get into the Add/Remove Software utility nothing at all happens.

    What have i done to deserve this? How do i fix it?

    The other morning my aspire one froze then when I rebooted it the add/remove software utility didnt open. In the end I had to use the recovery disk :( maybe someone else will have a way of avoiding this?
