Hi all - Newbie here who is also new to the AA1 and Linux, who is stuck, struggling and in need of help!

I cannot get the Add/remove software option to work, though Live update appears to work OK

When attempting I get the error message:

“Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again”

I have searched through the forum and found reference to file /var/cache/yum/fedora/mirrorlist.txt, which does not exist on my system. There is also talk of ensuring the port forwarding is on for ports 21 and 80 on any routers (mine are).

After the Add/remove software option fails and whilst looking at the Repository Manager screen, a review of the edit option shows the Mirror list as:

    http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirror ... &arch=i386

I can browse to this address and get the below

    # repo = rawhide arch = i386 country = BG country = RO country = GR country = PL country = FR country = NL country = NO country = CZ country = SK country = SE country = DE country = AT

One useful thing would be to run pirut from the terminal, and see what errors it's reporting. The errors which come up in the graphical interface are often not very helpful!

You'll need to run it as root, so the command is 'sudo pirut'; then copy and paste the error messages into a post here.

I've posted elsewhere but I'm in exactly the same boat and this is happening for me as well. Did the sudo pirut thing and this is the error notification:

    [user@localhost ~]$ sudo pirut
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirror ... &arch=i386 error was
    [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (110, 'Connection timed out')>
    [user@localhost ~]$

It seems to be a straight forward connection issue? How do i check the ports on the router? Incidently I've had problems getting aspire one mail to connect to my mail(IMAP)server. It did connect one time only and successfully downloaded the contents of my inbox but has never done so again since even tho the settings were not changed :?

    Thanks

Ok, so the problem in both cases is that Pirut doesn't thin k it can connect to the server.

    Three possibilities:

    1. The server is down/misconfigured. This seems unlikely: I can connect to it (albeit I may be connecting to a different mirror depending where we all live) and if the Fedora 8 mirror system was down I think there would be references to it all over!

    2. For some reason you can't connect to the server through your own Internet connections. Previous issues like this seem to have been resolved by changing router / network settings or (in one case) using a neighbour's network! I'd suggest this is probably the thing to test now: can you get to another network and try from there?

Judging on the number of posts you are both fairly new owners; has either of you ever managed to use add/remove software or Yum from the command line successfully before on your AAO? If not, then something to do with your router is a distinct possibility. (Live Update uses comlpetely different servers).

    3. There is some misconfiguration on your machines. Again, if they are new machines, this seems less likely; that's why I'm suggesting trying the different network option first to try to eliminate that possibility before delving into yum configurations.

Ok Fixed it, Router is a D-Link DSL-G624T.

I have had to connect to the router using a cable, set a static IP address on the AA1 and port forward on the router to the static IP address on ports 21 and 80.

I've posted this to a) show the problem is resolved and b) in case it helps anybody else.

Thanks to all who responded on this thread, Rgds,

Well there you go. I have the same router so i'll try your suggestions

    2 points tho

    1. How on earth did i manage to connect 1 time? i haven't been near another wireless network?
    2. Am I to assume that you are still unable to connect wirelessly?

    Thanks for everyones help :D

@cpnova: have you managed to use add/remove software successfully before then? If so, while I'd still suggest trying another network and seeing if it works, your case may be different!

I have never managed to connect in add/remove programs. I did manage however to download the contents of my mail in box to the aspire one mail on one occasion. I working on the basis that it is probably a router based problem for both?

I think that's likely; try someone else's network and see if it works any better!

(Round here that would be a good excuse for a pint at the local pub which does free wifi!)

Hi. I am completely new to linux. I have tried to open pirus and the package manager appears but then freezes part way through, I have been patient and left it a good while but it will not load up....

Is there another way of installing software, I want to put Skype on my daughters aspire... I have downloaded skype from its website and the skype RPM package is in the downloads file. When I click open with software installer the 'installing packages' box appears but nothing comes up to click 'apply' to.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks
