I took my 7 years old HP laptop to Staples for recycling after taking out the hard drive! I am just wondering if it is safe enough by just removing the hard drive out of it. The laptop itself had loss the sound system, and over heated for a long time. I don't do anything illegal like download music, game or movie, but there are personal information in it.

So am I safe from just removing the hard drive?

Thanks both of you :) IcyBC for asking and something back for replying :) I have a question though @something back, using an old hard drive as a backup drive, is it safe or is there a risk to lose data or something like that? Are there any other risks we should know about?

With everything it can fail, thats why a copy is so handy, you can clone one hard drive to another
even clone a large drive to a smaller one if there's not to much info on the large drive.

Of course you can clone a small one to a larger one, if the one on the computer you are using
is becoming full, or you wish to upgrade to a larger and faster one.

You can also upgrade from a sata/ide drive to a ssd or hdd drive

This may help explain the difference

Thank you @something back but the hard drive is for Window, and I am now using MackBook Air! They are not compatible are they?

I also have a Seagate portable hard drive for Window and have loads of photos and articles on it, but I was told I can't use it with my Mac. I have to find another one for my Mac.

Where do you live? Can I just bring my laptop and hard drive to you, @something back ? This sounds absolutely way over my comfort level with knowledge for computer. With my luck, I will definitely mess it up, or going bald by the end of the day :)

Thank you for the video @something back ! It all looks so easy! I once tempted to fix my point and shoot camera and got as far as taking out the parts, but putting them back was more than I bargained for. Long story short, I couldn't get to where I wanted to clean the inside of the lens and the screws won't even fitted back in there :(
