No, I will try that, thanks for the suggestion!

It's not a really big deal, since I can use the webcam fine if I disable EWF. I only have problems if I enable EWF and then try to use the webcam: instant BSOD. :(

    Hi there,

    Can this work:

I partition my 8GB SSD into two, lets say 4 GB (a) and 4 GB (b)
    I install xp on (a)
    I enable ewf
I dont want to commit anything, I want to lose everything each time I reboot
Whatever I want to keep, I will have to manually save on (b)

If this is possible, can anyone tell me what I actually have to do?

    Thanks!

not an ultimate solution in my case - yeah it boots ultra fast and all, and single application at a time looks to be ok(Word, Excel) ...but when trying to do some multitasking or even loading couple meduim content-heavy pages, starts to cause all kinds of errors(cmd.exe illegal operation - needs to be closed, drwatson - illegal operation - needs to be closed, explorer - illegal operation - needs to be closed, generic host process -crashed) - and minifreezes equal to the ones before ewf installation...
the worst cases are usually when i turn on wireless in ewf mode and then try to browse some pages in firefox - maybe 2-3 pages at a time at most - starts to freeze and then i start getting above mentioned errors and crashes...(just checked- minifreezes even when opening firefox and then waiting for 20 sec to type in the address bar....no, actually crashed completely - several processes need to be closed)
similar thing experienced when opening 20mb archive through totalcmd - after trying to unpack archive in to temporary folder on disk c: it tells you that it is unable to write to the designated location (c:programfiles\totalcmd\temp or smth)
the bizarre thing is that the jf_AutoHotkey did not ever report memory usage of over 10mb - a) strange in itself(why so low, why wouldn't firefox use it) b)definitely not a overflow of ewf.
so i am not really sure what to make out of all of this.
maybe moving Firefox cache to the sd card might be a solution(a bit too much hustle for me)
p.s. firefox freezes outright and then starts to crash the system when wireless is on - im clueless at this point

edit1: tried running ewf'ed system with wireless on from the beginning- appears to run a lot smoother than when wifi is enabled later on - not sure what is exactly the cause - hopefully will help somebody

I can't get it working with Windows 7 either. I can't even get the registry entries added because I do not have the permission. I can't change it either because I get an "Access Denied" error every time I try regardless of if I'm in a Administrator account or in Safe mode. Any help regarding this would be appreciated,

    Thanks, VoX

how can I be sure this worked?

I've tried the "ewfmgr c:" command, but the results are something like:
    type: ram <reg>
    state: disabled
    boot command: enable

Is is disabled then? I've tried the "ewfmgr c: -enable" command but it doesn't seem to work... It just shows the same stuff with " *** enabling overlay " on top.

Could it be because I couldn't set the Enabled key in Volume0 to 0? It just keeps appearing 0x00000000 (0)...

    Could somebody help me?

And should I disable Page File, even with 512 RAM?

'boot command: enable' = you need to reboot

after reboot check the state with 'ewfmgr c:'

i don't know if 512mb is gonna cut it, but definitely disable the pagefile.

that is set to 0, it's just showing you the hex value and then in brackets the decimal value.

I tried this EWF thing for about 6 months. Granted it is fast, but devilishly impractical. It froze once on the commit and I had to reinstall Windows XP, was a fantastically slow process.

300X CF and ZIF HDDs were way too expensive upgrades (hard to source too), So I ended up soldering on a sata connector to my AAO and added a 320GB HDD. Well worth it in my opinion.

well i finally got my system up and flying with EWF, it only took 1 reinstall from scratch , used ron[nl]TinyXP image(!!450mb WITH OFFICE 2003 and some other essential apps!!), about 15 min for xp install(imaging) and about 45min for final tweaking and additional software installation. But now it works like a charm - full 512Mb of EWF memory, no problemo.(1 gb of ram total)
system boots fully in 15-25 sec(ready to use!), shuts down in about 3-5 sec when EWF is enabled
The issues that I was experiencing before with EWF are no longer there, specifically my system does not crash within 10-15 min of heavy use. After countless reboots and crashes it became clear that my EWF was able to "store" only about 9.5-10mb of data before it would crash, and bring the whole system down with it. Obviously 10mbs of data vs 512mb according to specs was not something that I would put up with.
Apparently my EWF did not install correctly the first time, when it was installed on XP installed by this method "HOW-TO: Install XP via ANY USB Key, by lankyjames". It it very likely that specific method of XP installation has nothing to do with correct EWF work but who knows, anyhow I am a total ron[nl]TinyXP image fan now.

    my method of EWF install:
after reading ton of info about EWF on this forum, MS website, granturing, mp3car my procedure for EWF install boils down to:
a)get ewf files(ewfntldr, ewfmgr.exe, ewf.sys) - search this thread on where to find them or google ewf
b)get EWF Install Tool http://www.computa.co.uk/staff/dan/?p=5 - use directions on the website to install EWF -( a)Install EWF Support, b)Optimize Disk Writes) ONLY, HORM falls out of scope of this note, so install it ONLY if you know what you are doing and have a need for it.
c)Just to make sure that all REG entries and optimizations are done I also used the my compilation of REGISTRY entries for EWF:

Have you disabled the pagefile and moved any temp folders to a removable drive? I was having a similar issue until I moved the main windows temp directories and internet temp folders to my removable SD card in my expansion slot.

Works like a dream now, except one time my computer went to sleep and when I woke it up 15 minutes later it was up to 1GB of memory usage. Without having run any applications. I haven't been able to recreate it yet but it was quite odd. Anyone experience something similar?

just wanted to write that i'm having success with this method. i've got the slow SSD but it doesn't even matter anymore. pretty awesome.

the only thing i need (and maybe someone has a solution) is for youtube videos to download to memory, then clear once i watch a different video or close my browser. they currently go into %TEMP%, which i tried putting onto an sdhc card, but that turned out to be even slower than my AAO's SSD. haha.

but, not a big deal. i highly recommend this for anyone who has SSD. difference is night and day.

thanks to idq and whoever came up with this method originally.
