    Sorry for the cross post ...

    If using EWF, would it make any difference if the HDD was formatted as NTFS, or FAT32?

    Is there a stepwise guide you can point me too for speeding up windows over SSD?

    I installed Windows XP SP3 over my AAO (linpus). Did so after adding 1GB Ram (total 1.5GB now) disabled Virtual storage.

    It seems to run great but there are those times (during disk activity) everything comes to a standstill especially when i start MS word or new browser window or skype etc.

    How can i speed this up...?

    Also i can not understand all these code words you all are using like "EWF" etc?

    Thanks in advance

    You might want to actually read the thread you're posting in, dude. ;)

    Try as I might, I can't get this to work. Depending on what I do I get a BSOD or error message;

    Failed getting protected volume configuration with error 1.
    Incorrect function

    The below gives me a BSOD.

    I have extracted the ewfmgr and ewf files and placed them in the system32 and driver directories respectively.

    Contents of registry changes posted below (I use 2 files to merge into the registry):

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_EWF]
    "NextInstance"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_EWF\0000]
    "Service"="EWF"
    "Legacy"=dword:00000001
    "ConfigFlags"=dword:00000020
    "Class"="LegacyDriver"
    "ClassGUID"="{8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-0000F8753ED1}"
    "DeviceDesc"="EWF"
    "Capabilities"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_EWF\0000\Control]
    "ActiveService"="EWF"

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ewf]
    "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
    "Group"="System Bus Extender"
    "Start"=dword:00000000
    "Type"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ewf\Parameters]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ewf\Parameters\Protected]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ewf\Parameters\Protected\Volume0]
    "VolumeID"="{1EA414D1-6760-4625-8CBE-4F9F85A48E15}"
    "Type"=dword:00000001
    "ArcName"="multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

    ArcName appears to be correct and I have added Ewf to the upperfilter registry entry as suggested in this thread.

    The pagefile is on a separate drive (SDHC) and happens whether prefetch is on or off.

    have you tried adding the entries manually? i think people were having issues when adding with .reg file..

    Wow, thanks everyone! My AA1 is absolutely flying now with Ron's tinyxp image and EWF. I just can't believe how quick this is! Far exceeded my expectations

    Adding the entries manually still gives a BSOD.

    Problem was ArcName - copied entry from boot.ini (which is what I thought I had entered). Now it works!!!

    I wanted to use grella's idea for the 'write away at shut down' but when i typ gpedit.msc i get the following message : MMC could not create the snap-in..

    Ps i run on Ron's Tiny XP .. i guess that has something to do about it..

    Any solutions for this ?

    I think the system would be perfect if the 'write away' would be enabled

    thnx

    If I understand correctly, you want to have the system automatically commit the cached writes at shutdown?

    You don't need to edit your group policies for this. All you have to do is run "ewfmgr C: -commit" at some point while the machine is on. The commit command doesn't actually happen until shutdown.

    I'm using Ron's image too, I just put the command in a batch file in my startup folder. Works great!

    Now I get a BSOD when I use ewfmgr c: -commitanddisable -live

    BSOD says ewf.sys is to blame - non paged file error (not verbatim but close).

    Is it better to just use ewfmgr c: -commit ??

    Can't really say it's "better". They're meant for different purposes. The only time you should need to use "-commitanddisable -live" is when you can't wait until shutdown to commit the cached writes to disk. Then you have to re-enable ewfmgr. "-commit" just replaces whatever ewfmgr command is currently pending, then executes the pending command at shutdown.

    Ideally you'd want ewfmgr enabled all the time with "-commit" always being the pending command to execute at shutdown. The only time you should have any issue is if ewfmgr fails committing the write cache to the disk.

    Another question - does it matter if you have a paging file but on a separate drive from the protected volume. I think the answer is yes - I think from what I have observed by disabling the paging file on the unprotected volume you also reduce writes to the protected volume. Anyone else seen this?

    hey, thanks all for this incredibly helpful thread. however, i have a problem with implementing this, and i wonder if anyone else has had the same. having installed the ewfmgr and ewf.sys, and inserted the reg keys, i'm logged on as an administrator, but whenever i try to run ewfmgr c: -enable, i get the following error :

    Failed opening the target device \\.\c: with error 5
    Access is denied.

    Any ideas? it's driving me crazy...

    try to use this utility here and see how it goes
    viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4393
    - basically a script that simplifies your life once you start using EWF on a constant basis

    also, see if you are missing anything: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=833&start=130#p71182

    With EWF enabled, it's counter-productive to have a page file on the protected drive. The page file would be in RAM and completely defeat the purpose.

    I run my AA1 without a page file but a lot of people have moved it to a separate SDHC card which is probably the ideal way to run.

    thanks mrzerga - i got there in the end; user access control was enabled, and that was what messed me up. deactivated it, and the computer runs like an absolute dream. it really is incredible what a difference this ewf makes.

    hey guys - i hope you don't mind me calling on your expertise one more time. I don't think this topic has been clearly addressed so far. EWF is working really well, but i find the buffer fills pretty fast, causing the laptop to crash when i hit 512Mb. what can i do to minimise this? I've already eradicated the pagefile. And could anyone please provide detailed instructions on how to do the following, which seems to be best practice?

    Create a RAM drive (what size is best on 1 gig machine? 128Mb?)
    Send browser TMP files to ramdrive
    Move profile to separate non-EWF'd disk, in Vista

    Are there any other storage hungry issues i need to address (prefetch, etc?)

    A detailed list would be really helpful for lots of people I think.

    Thanks so so much in advance. This really has been a helpful thread. I thought my laptop was rubbish, but it now works brilliantly!
