I have been using AVG for years, but recently decided to try Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and I really like it. It seems to use less resources and isn't always bugging you for something. Give it a try.

I found AVG was not finding much and was bogging down. Another thread user suggested Avira. I downloaded it and it found more than AVG, used less system resources, and the computer didn't bog down. Right now, after installing 7 I have nothing but Defender lol......but if I went to anything it would be Avira again.

I found Avira very good a year or so ago, tho have switched to Norton NIS. If you use internet other than behind home and work router firewalls, you want to run something like ZoneAlarm free firewall with it. For free, I would also be curious to try the new Microsoft Security Essentials (which I think is good for W7, too.)

A trick for Avira in XP, to get rid of the advertising screen when it downloads updates:

    1. Boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly press F8 after boot)
    2. Login under the Administrator account
    3. Navigate to C:\Program File\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
    4. Right-click avnotify.exe - Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
    5. Look under the Permissions folder for a listing of all the system users. Do the following for all the users:
    6. Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK
    7. Reboot (into Normal mode) when finished

After this, Avira works fine with no more nag screen.

Decided to go with MSE.. And I'd highly recommend it. Like he said, not intrusive, doesn't pop up and tell you something's up... Kinda runs on it's own. Just do a manual scan every week or so and you're good to go.

I know this is an older post, but I had to chime in with the gem I found. Vipre Antivirus and Antispyware:

    http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-Home-Office/VIPRE/

This is a really lightweight suite of Virus and Spyware protection. I've got it running on my 751h and it takes very little memory and cpu to run. The cost is pretty reasonable as well. You can get a license for as little as 19.95 if you look for online coupons. I tried AVG and McAfee as well, this one outperforms both hands down! Industry tests show this product to be superior to McAfee in independent lab tests as well. For what it's worth...

I put this on all 5 of our machines and even made my mother and father-in-law switch to it.

Here's the latest independent "real world" testing of consumer security suites for effectiveness:

Norton is the lightest on resources, but not cheap. Avira and Microsoft Security Essentials look like good freeware bets.

I think Avast shows identical results to Microsoft and is free?
It's interesting that the test shows Avast as a 5.0 version and Avast shows no such version (it's 4.8) for either the Pro pr Free version.

I'm personally going into new year renewal mode on my current installs of NIS2009, so have been watching new suite alternatives, especially free ones. My concern about Avast would be resource use, especially for the little netbook, not threat effectiveness shown on the above test. For example:

Another vote for MSE. Been using it since beta and it simply does what it's supposed to do.

I agree about MSE. It's free. It's lightweight and it seems to work well.

Let's face it; none of the anti-virus solutions out there are perfect. They all play catch up constantly with the latest malware out there.

I agree. I've put it on a few computers and it seems lightweight and unobtrusive. It's like a 4MB download, so it can't be that heavy on system resources.

Someone on another forum said it uses a powerful scanning engine and that it really is a good piece of software.

One thing to keep in mind is that it runs windows validation before it installs.
