Two of my machines are still on AVG, I changed 3 others (including the 'ONE') to Avast!.

Avast seems to be less of a drain on the system, and my (4 yo) son likes it on his computer, since it uses a voice program to tell you it's been updated.

I'll probably switch the other 2 machines over eventually, AVG free gets hung up on updating alot, and it is resource heavy when scanning.

thanks all...i've tested both eset and avira...and i'm gonna go with avira free along with windows defender...i think thats good enough security for my computer...I particularly like the scheduling options available in avira antivir plus of course it is good on resources...

I'm using ESET Smart Security (which is pretty much NOD32.. but an "All-in-One" version). Works great.. lower ram usage than when I had both Avira and ZoneAlarm installed.

There is a "TemDono Fix" that allows it to be free.

From my few year experience, I think AVG Free anti-virus is the best one on the web. It is light and fast. The new version (AVG Free 8.0) comes with anti-spyware and when you go to Google, MSN or Yahoo it says if the website is infected or not. I've been using AVG for a while now and I think it's great. Another Anti-virus software which is fast and light is Clam anti-virus and it's free as well. It is very good for Linux but Windows XP won't recognize it for some reason... :?

    RE: Symantec Internet Security 2009.

I had a "loose" activation left from my mom's copy, so I put it on my AO. I have to admit, I'm fairly impressed with this version over the former resource heavy dogware from past years. It loads up quick, runs efficiently and it streams updates instead of running a LiveUpdate at set intervals.

My AO is going to be used mostly for traveling and it'll be connected to a lot of foreign networks. I think this is a tighter security platform then you're going to find with the freebie solutions out there. And it's Christmas time - I've already seen the 3-user version of this software advertised for $0-20 with rebates from places like Fry's electronics.

Overall, I'd give it a thumbs up.

Avira saved my butt twice already. Rare for my system to get a virus, but when I do get one it's super ugly cause all methods of detection failed. Couple times already I struggled to clean my system from virus and spyware alike, coz it was hindering my system and anti-virus and anti-spyware software wouldnt find something. Guess what, Avira did. First time i let it fixed it and then I went back to avast. After it failed again n avira saved my butt, I am sticking with it now. Avira guard is super, it even finds virii that download when visiting some websites. So far nothing else i tired compares, avg, avast, mcaffee and the devil norton lol.

I am running Avast on all my distros. My Desktop Linux/Windows XP/Vista all run Avast, works very well
On my netbook, I tried AVG for a bit, yes it does use slightly less resources than avast, unfortunatly the active scanner for AVG sucks the big one, and misses some common virus's (beep.sys virus for one)
Avast is much better, my recommendation is Avast, free version.

Actually AVG's new linkscanner will slow down your computer. This will be most noticeable on SSD versions of the AAO. And even on the A150 the boot time will increase with this enabled. Along with larger memory footprint. Unlick the linkscanner option on setup if you want AVG 8 to be lean.... ;)
