Those ratings are for the premium or "pay" versions. What about testing for the free versions?

I replaced my AVG Free 8.0 Anti-virus software with Avira Antivir Personal - Free Antivirus. I like the layout very much, I couldn't find scan results on the AVG layout :( The update worked fine and I also runned a scan. Seems to work a little bit better that AVG 8.0 Scan because it killed asp.net files .. not sure what they're for, but AVG didn't warn me about them. It also killed one other infected file. My computer works fine now, can't complain. Installation was 2x smaller that the AVG one, also this is simpler. I like this... ;)

I'll stick to Avast. It's free, updates itself and runs quietly in the background. The only time it makes the system lag is when it is bringing up an update message...and even then it is a bearable lag.

Worst Antivirus prog? Ahnlabs product, used all over South Korea. I got two bugs on comp here, said screw it to the admin controls, installed AVG...cleaned up the viruses, etc.

Ahnlab...if you have never heard of it, you don't want it

I started with AVG and uninstalled after one week. It dominated after boot-up and left me sitting on my hands while it searched for updates. Then it would respond badly because the wireless connection hadn't had time to connect before it tried to find the updates. I went with avast!, which I use happily on my other home pc's.

    Comodo Firewall / Antivirus?

I don't see a mention of the free Comodo firewall / AV. Any opinions?

I really like Avira Antivir as a anti virus. Also (not to change topic), i like to use McAfee SiteAdvisor which tells you when you search google which sites are good and which are not, or atleast to be careful what you download.

I know this sounds like a ridiculous question, but I think I downloaded Avira. How do I know it's been downloaded and is working?

I appreciate any answer without sarcasm. I'm sure there are areas that I'm knowledgeable about and could make you look foolish<g>

    Hi Steproy,

    Thanks.

I'm using XP and I did a search for Avira as you suggested. Two files showed up.

    1)the avira manual
    2) anti virus for linux,windows in C:\documents and settings\my name\favorites

Sounds like it's there, but in control panels it says I don't have virus protection and there doesn't appear to be a means to turn it on.

Well if you installed it and it say's you are not protected it is because either Avira is not update, or its not insated or not correctly installed. I guess its because it not updated, because every time i installed it(total of 2 times), windows says it was not protected because avira was not updated, so i update and it fixed the problem. i keep it updated every 3 days because after that it annoys you with "avira is not update, this puts your computer at risk"

It looks like 1) is an instruction manual (probably .pdf to read in Acrobat) and 2) is just an Internet Explorer link to the Avira website. Double check whether you have installed it by going to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs to see if Avira is on the list of installed programs. If not, you haven't installed it.

If you haven't installed Avira, go to the site and do it again, but when a "Save As" box comes up be sure to select an obvious easy to find folder (such as "My Documents") for it to go to. Then you can double-click that setup file to actually install the application. (IF the download dialog box contains a choice to "Run" you can click that to directly install the program from the internet, then and there without having to hunt for the file.) You can always confirm you've installed by looking at "Add or Remove Programs." Hope this helps.

(Avira is a very good choice among the free AVs, but you should also install a firewall to go with it. Also you will discover a nuisance advertising screen urging you to pay, but there is a trick to disable it.)

Be careful guys if you have Kerio Personal Firewall, it is not compatible with Avira Antivir. I've had to change for Bitdefender v10. I am happy with it: free, very light footprint and updates silently and unobtrusively.

    cheers.

I was running ZoneAlarm Free with Avira, very well, until a few days ago when I got a good price on Norton Internet Security for my main PC, which comes with three licenses. Since it's lighter on resources and very elegant I put it on the Acer.

I'm running Avira with Comodo firewall with no problems, either.

They are very unobtrusive until something bad tries to get in. Just like I like it.

Here you go. Windows XP firewall is limited to protection against inbound attacks, it doesn't check whether your system is sending outbound attacks - google to learn more. It is fine with some AV software, like Norton AV, that has its own outbound protection. Otherwise a full firewall should be installed. I had to dig my notes, but here's fixing the Avira nag (also can be googled):

Windows XP Home (and Media Center)

    1. Boot into Safe Mode (repeatedly press F8 after boot)
    2. Login under the Administrator account
    3. Navigate to C:\Program File\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe
    4. Right-click “avnotify” - Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
    5. Look under the Permissions folder for a listing of all the system users. Do the following for all the users:
    6. Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK
    7. Reboot (into Normal mode) when finished
