My week-old Aspire One 10.4" netbook makes the clicking sound that a computer usually makes when shutting down, every few hours of use. Is this normal?

No. Clicking sound comes often from dying HDD... It could be coincidence obviously but a lot of people reported this type of issue...

Strange enough my old 150 model used to make this clicking sound all the time. I thought the hard drive was farked. But it turns out the AAO died completely before the hard drive. It's currently hooked up to my Wii so I don't have to use disks anymore (stops the kids from scratcthing them)

You might want to read below about HDD clicks on the Acer. It's both a power management and more importantly a safety feature - whether it's necessary depends on how rough the user is on the machine. I wouldn't disable it if I was slinging it around in a backpack instead of mainly using it about the house.

As described, A1ctl fan control software is much used and discussed here - I don't know how well it works on the latest models:
