Since so many of you received the disks from Acer for free. Can someone make an iso image and post it on torrent or somewhere so that others can download? I think it would be helpful for those who couldn't get the set from them without being asked to pay $40 + shipping.

    Just an idea

    !

Don't let Acer off the hook! I was told the computer was *supposed* to come with the disks
and they apologized (eventually!) that I didn't have them. So if they sent the disks for free to
me and other users, they can't discriminate against you and demand $$$$. That would
probably be justification for a class action lawsuit and I imagine it would be hard for them
to win when they've stated that the computer was indeed supposed to have the disks
    IN THE BOX!

What excuse is Acer giving you? Can you post the specifics here?

You're better off receiving original disks from Acer because even if someone
is willing to post an ISO and won't knowingly put a virus on it, there's always
the possibility they have an unkown infection they could spread to you. FUD
maybe, but I don't like taking that chance.

More fodder for the search engines. If enough people feed the engines, searches
will be a little more informative for prospective buyers:

    Acer Recovery Disk Scam
    Acer crap
    Acer screws customers
    Acer ripoff
    Acer cuts corners
    Acer pinches pennies.

I just spent less then 10 minutes on the phone with Acer and my disk are ordered - like mentioned before the disk are on back order so it will be a few weeks before I get them.

Looks like enough people are calling about them that the techs are not even going through their speel about using the recovery partition anymore. The one I talked to just asked for the serial number and after telling him that I needed the XP recovery disks he ordered them for me and give me a service # for the order and told me that they are on back order.

Quick and painless - thanks to all that have called before me.

Just ordered my set as well! It was a 7:52min phone call! No hassles with the recovery partition either. He just took my info and told me the recovery set would be sent this week? Maybe they are catching up to the back orders? I'm glad I can get a recovery set, now I won't be so hesitant to wipe the whole hard drive for my OS X install!

Yes, these are different. imcrazy, the supplier of the unofficial xp recovery cd said "In reality this is simply an OEM copy of Windows XP Home SP3 with the official Acer Aspire One drivers injected into it using nlite."
I used it to put XP back on my harddrive after experimenting with Acer Linplus. Had to install it using a cheap usb external cd but it worked smooth as silk (thanks imcrazy!). Had no trouble registering over internet with OEM key.

I got the Aspire recovery discs as well but the 2nd disc is a DVD which meant that it cannot be read by my cd unit so I was unable to install it. I have since acquired an $24 external enclosure in which I put in a spare DVD unit but I don't see any reason to try the official Acer discs as my system is working great (boots up with wifi connected in one minute)

acer did very well. less than 24 hours after i called the FedEx guy knocked on the door with the two disks. as posted before the disks are -

    System Disk (part # SD.S050B.AX1)
    Recovery Disk (part # RD.S050B.AE1)

not bad for, "3-5 week backorder."

Are these the same disks that are available for about $20 from the Acer website? Seems like they should be free on their site if they are giving them free to anyone who calls.

I suspect that when you call you give them the s/n of your AAO. This proves you are a customer of theirs and not someone just wanting to download a free disk.

I was thinking that too but on their site they ask for your SS before letting your purchase them.

I just got off the phone. Took about 3 minutes. The tech had me run the eRecovery software. He said on the ones where you can create the discs yourself, there is a "Backup" tab on the bottom. One mine, there is only the "Restore" tab.

On my Acer Aspire 9300-5005 that came with Vista I had the option the very first time I turned it on to make a backup restore image of my drive. But once I got into the program I was no longer allowed to do this as it was a one time only option. I called Acer and said I did it but that the disk I made would not work. I ask why I could no longer make the image and they said the imaging software was only to make a backup of what came with the computer and nothing else as per MS requirements. I ask what I should do since the computer won't work without the operating system and the backup doesn't work either and they sent me a set of restore CD's.

Well I have no desire for recovery cd's (I can use the eRecovery via ALT+F10 to do the same) but I'd really like to be able to create an image at any time as that website suggests I should be able to do.

Called Acer via the toll free number. The support technician tried to argue that 1) "we have clarified the issue with microsoft and are not required to provide anything other than a way to restore your computer" and 2) "you can restore your computer from the boot screen". After insisting that 1) I paid for a license and did not have a way to restore the computer in the event of a catastrophic failure, 2) restoring from the PQSERVICE partition would only work if it was not damaged, and 3) that my manual stated that I should be able to make recovery cds; the support technician took my serial number and begrudgingly consented to send me the media free of charge. It arrived within 3 days.

For all those who wish to use the usual eRecovery environment and have the capabilities described online and in the manual, the solution is in this thread in the last post on page 4 "How *expletive* to Create a recovery DVD". Just follow the instructions and you'll have a working eRecovery system using only the available ACER software and one additional DLL.

I also used gparted to backup my PQSERVICE partition and dd'ed the mbr so I could have a full factory fix at any time with minimal work.

All you need is a burner and about 10 minutes to install the documented version of eRecovery. Regardless, CALL and get your disks. I'm glad they were shipped out quickly, but we're missing anytime backup with the default install and the system is not as described in the manual. Come on ACER, stop wasting resources on trying to swindle paying customers.

Just got off the phone after calling 1-866-695-2237 thanks to Evil Manager :D , I will be sent the the 2 recovery disk set free of charge but the agent mentioned them being on back order and It would take 2 to 3 weeks before I received them but, somebody else here was told the same and he got them pretty quick, I never mentioned the recovery disk set all I did was call and ask for help creating them, the agent had me try and choose the "Burn Disk" or "Backup" option wich is non existant till she gave up and offered the disk set her self, good luck to you guys trying to get them I'd call them ASAP

Evidently, Acer support has gotten the message -- It took me all of 15 minutes (including hold time) to get "Ken" to register my AA1, gather my ship-to information, and place an order for the System and Recovery CDs. He told me they were currently on back order, and would be shipped out as soon as they were in stock, at no cost to me.

Thanks to the forum for saving me lots of time, trying to figure out how to create my own recovery disks!

The hardest part of the whole ordeal was correctly telling him the serial number, a number large enough to keep track of almost every individual molecule in the universe! :p

    Hi,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post my question.
I do want the recovery disks, and I will call tomorrow.

I originally wanted to backup my entire HDD to another HDD, so I installed Acronis Home 2009.
After the installation, I got the dreaded BSOD (Black Screen of Death).

I searched around after that and found a fix at:
    http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/acer ... overy.html

However, after performing this fix, I no longer have eRecovery option, neither during boot up Alt-F10, or inside Windows (it simply says: eRecovery service is not available).
The partition PQSERVICE is still there.

Is there a fix for me to get back these options?

Thanks, and sorry if this is at the wrong place.

PS. Does the recovery disks that Acer provide install the eRecovery Management after you use them to reinstall your AAO?
