Aspire laptop CD/DVD burner and player problems

    Hello everyone,
    I am new to this forum, and I have a problem with my new Aspire 5332 laptop. After I deleted the unwanted software and games and also installed some of my software( which works fine in my older laptop and I use for work ) , I attempted to make a recovery disk, but I couldn't.
    Simply I kept recieving a message to insert a disc. Same when I attempted to play a DVD, for some reason , even though I used different makes and brands of cd's & dvd's, still it doesn't recognise that there is anything in the drive.
    By the way, these same cd's and dvd's work fine with my older (3yrs old) laptop.
    I would appreciate any help
