Note: I thought about putting this in the Hardware Problems subforum, but since the One is working fine I'll post it here.

I was testing a custom Debian live-usb in the One when I decided it would be a good idea to compile the madwifi drivers, just in case. It was late, so I left it compiling and added "&& shutdown -h now" to "make && make install && make clean". It worked perfectly for me on previous occasions... The problem is that the live-usb distro won't shutdown until you press enter (it prompts you to remove the pendrive). As far as I know, the shutdown process sets the CPU to full speed (it's the CPU governor who does that), but there were no processes running at the las stage. Approximate uptime: 5 hours.

How much harm could it do to the One? Should I be *really* worried? Take into account I use the One to take notes while at the university (not like my other bulky laptop that stays at home, mostly).

No fan mods, no overclocking... Just an extra 1GB ram module.

EDIT: No problems today, so I guess it's a sturdy machine.

    Problems? Doubt it.

I work on mine/have mine running from 8.20-5 every day, no issues. Also occasionally leave it on overnight downloading. Seems quite happy to do it.

Even if the processor is clocked all the way up to 1.6GHz, if nothing is happening (noops), you won't get much heat. Emergency shutoff max temp is 99C, or 210F. You would have noticed if it got hotter than this ;) No worries.

That said, I used to run into emergency shutdowns regularly on my old dell precision m70 because linux was incapable of throttling the CPU properly - its emergency temp was also 99C. Even with several of these events, I have no problems with that machine now that it runs windows home server. Spraying out all the vents / heat-sinks with my air compressor has reduced fan cycling considerably. :D

My AA1 has been running nearly 24x7 since I bought it about 4 months ago. No issues with heat. Using Fedora 10 but kept the XP for occasional dual boot. Is 120GB drive model, tho I have replaced the drive with 500GB. Except for a BIOS issue in the first month (prior to drive upgrade, fixed by v3309), it's been absolutely flawless.

Atom netbooks consume very little power even if at full 1.6ghz. You can run this machine as much as you want like any other "laptop" without any issues. :)

Thank you all for your replies!!

Well, the One is working perfectly, no problems so far. Now I'm running a 2.6.29 stock Debian Linux kernel with acerhdf, so I can check the temp. and reduce fan usage (hence, now I have more battery life).

I'm in love with this netbook!
