I am having the exact same issue with my ZG5 as well except I am running Linux Mint not Windows XP. The fact that the issue occurs to the bios (as well as our difference in operating systems) leads me to believe it is a hardware, not software issue. Also I have flashed the bios with a few different versions 3303, 3307, 3310 and an unofficial one from http://macles.blogspot.com/2009/03/brightness-table.html with no luck in that department.

Does this happen to you every time you boot up or does it happen every once in a while?

The only thing that has helped me (but has not perfectly solved the problem) was opening up the case, taking out the ribbon cable for the monitor (this process also involved taking out the keyboard and trackpad, so those could potentially be the issue) and putting it back in. Now it only gives me that issue about 20% of the time I boot up. I have not decided on whether it is the hardware itself that is failing or if there is just a faulty wire for the monitor. It is confusing to me because I have left the computer sitting in one place, not moving/touching it or adjusting the angle of the screen, then when I turn it back on the screen has failed to work correctly.

Please let me know what happens after you open it up, hopefully we can figure this one out.
