    Hi,

    I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix as soon as I bought my new Acer AOP531H-1CK 10" netbook. The wired connection does not work because the machine cannot find eth0. I have also tried Fedora Core, Mandriva, OpenSuse, and Linpus Lite, the problems that these installations had are similar. I used the Preferences->Network Connections to build a connection but the problem remains. The Administration->NetworkTools does not see eth0, but does see a "unknown interface" wmaster0. I would really appreciate it if anyone can throw some sunshine on this. Thanks!

    Below is my procedures and outputs.

    First I manually edit this file:

    Code:
    [b]$ sudo vim /etc/network/interfaces[/b]

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    address 192.168.**.90
    netmask 255.255.128.0
    gateway 192.168.0.1
    hwaddress ether 00:02:2e:f1:**:52
    /etc/network/interfaces (END)
    Then I restarted the network without success.

    Code:
    [b]$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart[/b]
     * Reconfiguring network interfaces...
    SIOCSIFHWADDR: No such device
    Failed to bring up eth0.
    It seems that ifconfig cannot find eth0.

    Code:
    [b]@Hal:~$ ifconfig[/b]
    lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
              inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
              inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

    But there IS a ethernet controller.

    Finally I found my way out following this thread,
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... 250&page=2

    SOLUTION:

    Download AR81Family-linux-v1.0.0.10.tar.gz from
    http://partner.atheros.com/Drivers.aspx
    Put it in a directory, and

    Code:
    $ gunzip AR81Family-linux-v1.0.0.10.tar.gz
    $ tar xvf AR81Family-linux-v1.0.0.10.tar
    $ cd src
    $ make
    $ sudo make install
    $ cd /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/net/atl1e/
    $ sudo insmod ./atl1e.ko
    Thus the driver is installed and the eth0 deviced can be detected and configured. Problem solved.
