AspireOne 110 Linus Broken Screen

    My son has broke his screen.
    I have tried connecting it to an external ACER Monitor but when I do, first it comes up with a blue screen with Aspire one in the bottom right hand corner and then goes through a series of messages to tell me that the

    xrdb has been been reject
    GtK- Warning ** cannot open display: :0.0
    Starting SCIM as a daemon...
    failed to launch SCIM
    intel_ring: FWH not detected.


    My questions are:
    Is this thing toast?
    Is there any way to get it working with an external monitor
    Is it worth swapping the screen or is it more than the screen that been broken
