Thanks for your detailed instructions Fabien, followed them, (with the change suggested by Guy - thanks Guy) and was easily able to find my networked machines.

I have two issues if anyone could help please....

    1. For some reason the pyNeighborhood directory was created under the pyNeighborhood-0.4.1 directory in Downloads, I believe this was due to not having "full paths" enabled when I did the extract - but how do I get rid of it so I can try again and put it somewhere sensible, I guess I need to uninstall pyNeighborhood first - but how?

    2. Once I've sorted out point 1 and got a clean install somewhere - how do I add a desktop Icon for pyNeighborhood, I've tried various tweaks to the group-app.xml file but just managed to create icons that dont work!

Any guru's available with all the answers???

    Regards

    EcoTed :?

I used the following in the group-app.xml file:

    <app sequence="8">/usr/local/share/applications/pyNeighborhood.desktop</app>

I also edited the desktop file (pyNeighborhood.desktop) and added:

    Comment=Browse the Network

    also used the icon:

    Icon=/usr/local/share/pyNeighborhood/icons/pyneighborhood.png

    desktop file is in /usr/local/share/applications

Thank you grwkak - that worked nicely  (although that icon is a bit naff - I'm just happy it works). There should be a sticky somewhere with just the instructions from the front page and a couple of the comments incorporated. This Linux stuff is hard work!

    Regards

    Hi Guy
It has taken me quite a while to get this far as have only had the AA1 for about 4 days and am new to Linux. I am having a little trouble with editing the desktop file as I can't seem to find it! Am typing in
usr/local/share/applications/pyNeighborhood.desktop and when I hit enter it just opens up the pyNeighborhood application, so am obviously doing something daft! Likewise I cannot find where to type in the Icon as you described.
This would be very useful to know as I am trying to restore the icon for the Mobile Partner and am sure this would help. I know how to access the group file and have successfully added the aMSN icon, so am getting there!
If you could just clarify what silly mistake I am making would be most grateful.

    Goodness me.
    This is so complicated???!

    As per Fabien's instructions:
    I download the pyNeighborhood tar.
Extract it (it appears in the Downloads folder)

I type: cd pyNeighborhood-0.4.1 to get into the folder.

    I type: ./configure and get:
Next I type: make and get:
Now after here goes tits up, because I type: make install (as per the instructions, right??) and get:
Can anyone point a bloke with a slight disability with text and characters what to do next. If you can spell it out step by step It'd be great. I'll bloody donate something somewhere!

I have created a folder called lan at /home/user/lan - I'm not even sure if that's correct anymore. I've been trying to do this for hours.

    Sorted.

Made a share folder in XP.

    In terminal: mount -t cifs -o username=USERNAME,password=PASSWORD //192.168.1.2/E/Music /mnt/home/Share

All contents of E/Music appear in Share folder.

In menu editor create a shortcut with the above command line.

    Job done.

    Picked it up from: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/09/05 ... page4.html (Number 8)

Fantastic - I just needed the bit with the username and password in to get the authentication working and all is now sorted!
Putting it in the advance menu has made life sooo much easier...
    Thanks for that!

OK - Spent the last 11 hours on this ! Nearly there....

Thanks to Fabian and others - great information.

However, I was hoping that I would be able to see/access the Aspire drives/folders/files from my Windows XP file manager, in My Network Places. Is that not going to be possible? I can see Windows files from th Aspire but not the other way round.

    Thanks,
    RzB

I found a post on another forum that was helpful to me on this...

In file manager I navigated to ...

    /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/

in that folder I found ...

    group-app.xml

I was able to edit and save this file using Mousepad.

NB. I'm a complete Linux newbie - so I'm waiting for the ridicule about why I shouldn't do it this way! :)

    Thanks,
    RzB

    Hello,
here are few remarks for newbies like me,
to add a nice icon onto acer built-in desktop,
    just edit file : ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml
    example :
    Code:
    mousepad /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/group-app.xml
at the end of group 5 (search for <id>5</id>, and go before </group>) add :
    Code:
    <app sequence="7">/usr/local/share/applications/pyNeighborhood.desktop</app>
I took sequence 7, but you can switch with an existing application (like IM : seq=1)

to change icon to 64x64, change the desktop file itself to replace 48x48 into 64x64 on "Icon=" line (the 5th)
    Code:
    sudo mousepad /usr/local/share/applications/pyNeighborhood.desktop
note also that 0.5.0rc2 version does not compile, with fabien tutorial.

note, if you use sunbelt personal firewall (formally kerio pf) on your windows machine, you have to comment the line that start with
    Code:
    alert tcp $EXTERNAL_NET any -> $HOME_NET 445 (msg:"NETBIOS SMB DCERPC
    on file C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\Personal Firewall\Config\IDSRules\netbios.rlk
    otherwise smb scan will fails.

I would like to add it to the right click menu (expert mode) but I could not find it (I would like to add this into Network submenu)

funny thing my name is also Fabien ;)

edit : ho, I dodn't see RzB made also a tutorial about the same topic...

Hmm - I have access via cable but my wireless connections have stopped working.

I go into the Connection Manager, select a connection and click on the connect button and nothing happens.

If I try to add a new WLAN connection, and do a rescan, there are no connection points shown. They shouild be there as I have another laptop working just fine.

I think this has happend since I installed these fixes - could be a complete coincidence and be down to something else entirely of course.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks,
    RzB

Push it right and it all bursts into life!

    Super newbie question...

Someone said they got their Aspire 'unlocked'.

Is this regarding the SIM card, the OS or what?

    Thanks!

Thanks to guidance for using pyNeighborhood I have just cracked access from Aspire One to files on my Vista Desktop . However, feeling of achievement was dashed when reboot of Acer resulted in loss of networking, false battery indication (said it was on mains),failed audio and even unable to type into terminal. Am in process of full recovery and do not relish having to reconfigure everything. My initial reaction was that the installation had caused problem but now am wondering if battery ran out and cocked everything up. Any (helpful!) comments?

This did for me ! :D ! Many Many thanks!
Like a lot of people here, I bought the AA1 to learn Linux, and am I struggling! But when something works it's so good.
Now, presumably I didn't need to go down the route of installing pyNeighborhood (which still refuses to mount ANYTHING), so how do I backtrack and uninstall it?
Thanks Fabian, krog and everyone else. Us newbies will get there eventually

    Cheers

pyNeighborhood is working fine and I can see shared folders on my Vista system, however any attempt at mounting is met with error message "Failed to Mount"

I have created /home/user/lan and changed Mount Folder to point to it (user has read/write access)
    SMB is disabled
CIFS Mount Command = sudo mount, Unmount command = sudo umount
    File Manager is thunar

Any tips would be so appreciated, so near yet so far

    Cheers all
