Other battery powered electronic devices (cell phones, dvd players, etc.) can be plugged into and charged by automobile power.
What about the AAO? Has anyone tried this yet with an AAO? If so, what device did you use?

What we know about the AAO:
    1. The AC Power Adapter ADP-30JH B, output is 19v 1.58A
    2. The 3-cell battery UM08A31 rating is 10.8v 2200mAh, 23.76Whr

From what has been stated, two questions come to mind:
    1. Are there automobile power adapters available for a reasonable price that can be used to operate and charge the AAO?

    2. Has anyone given any thought towards building an auxiliary power supply using 12 each commonly available D, C, or AA size batteries (maybe rechargeable) connected in series providing 18v to connect into the power port of the AAO?

    Would it work?

    Disadvantages?

    Advantages?

    Alternative solutions?
A DC-to-AC Power Inverter plugged into the automobile power outlet seems to be an awkward solution.

Here's hoping for some good ideas.

The DC-AC inverter approach (a Belkin AC Anywhere 140W for about 30 Euros) works for me.
Perhaps not the most elegant solution but the inverter is not tied to just powering your AA1.

Mike, thanks for your suggestion. After reviewing the available products, I ordered a Rosewill RCP-511F 400W inverter from Newegg - 2 outlets and rated at 5 stars by several folks.

Maybe I muddied the waters by asking too many questions in my original post.

What I really want to know about are the possibilities of using an external "commodity" battery to augment the AAO's meager power supply when there is no AC or nearby automobile power source available like maybe when you are out in the boondocks or at a ballgame.

I have a battery-powered Black & Decker trimmer that uses a 19.6V battery. Wouldn't it be neat if that battery could be used to power the AAO? Would probably last for a week - well, at least a few days.posting.php?mode=reply&f=58&t=11567#

You want an APC UPB50. This is an external 50Wh battery that connects via the power port. The AAO acts like it is plugged in to a wall outlet. I have one and it adds 3.5 hours to my AAO (watching movies with VLC at a fairly low brightness). APC no longer makes these but you can find them on eBay. If you buy one, you will use the "K" and "k" tips.

Why don't you use rechargable protected Li-ion cells. They range from 1800mAh -2800mAh. Those batteries are even better than the ones used in the aao's battery. Just hook them up series, then hook them up to a charging circuit from a compatible battery then hook up it to AAO.

I have an older 120W Kensington auto/air/AC adapter with interchangeable tips for each supported laptop.

I bought it for my Dell Inspiron E1705 along with a set of Dell tips, but was able to purchase a tip for Acer laptops from them. I think the Acer tip is tip N17 or N14 (at least for the model I have, I think new models of their adapters use different tips but the nice thing is they are now prepackaged with all available laptop tips).

The Aspire One uses the same power connector as Acer's other Aspire laptops, so while the AAO isn't listed on Kensington's site, the tip used for all of Acer's other models works fine.

The only problem I see with building an external battery pack, would be getting 13+ batteries, in a form factor that was small enough to carry. 19v / 1.4v = 13.5, that's assuming you get 1.4 volts per battery.

Lithium batteries are much better. 3 18650 batteries can power AAO for about 3 hours.

    Thanks, Marek.

I took your advice on ordering one (80 watt model) from Meritline. Works great in my vehicle with my GlobalSat BU-353 GPS device connected to a USB port.

    Cheers.

Uhm. Just get a 12-cell battery for your AAO. They are available on ebay for about $40.
