People with pda's or advanced mobile phones will probably know of AvantGo; a program that allows you to download the contents of selected websites (like e.g. CNN) while the pda is connected to the internet, so you can read them later without that connection. For instance while in the train to work.

Can anyone recommend a good application that does the same for the One ? So connect the One to the net at home, have it automatically download a bunch of websites, take it with me and enjoy reading in places where wifi is unavailable?

Of course, I could always do some creative stuff with wget...

You've answer your own question :)

Plucker might be a possibility also.

There are a lot of options, but I haven't settled on one myself (primarily because I have WiFi or can tether to my cell phone wherever I am).

Plucker is a great option. I've used it on my Palm devices for years. I prefer SunriseXP to "pluck" the sites, and Plucker to view on my TX or 755p.

I'm told there's a Windows desktop version of Plucker, but I haven't found it. Instead, I've been directed to use FBReader. I downloaded it and tried it once. It seems to be a good answer to read Plucker files on the desktop. Again, I don't use it right now, simply because I always have internet access.

There are also a lot of option related to Firefox and/or offline RSS feed readers (as well as other browsers). Try the Readitlater plugin for Firefox. You can use it to mark links to read later (online), as well as mark them to read offline.

Plucker unfortunately seems to not be seriously maintained anymore :( However, the toying with the fonts was fun and instructive ;)
