Based on recommendations here, I deleted AVG and put on Avira. It is smaller, but when it does the updates has an annoying pop up to buy the software. My question does the Avira Guard Service need to be running. Is that the control panel and if shut down would the anti-virus run alone, or is it needed for anitivirus and updates to work? Thanks,

It's needed for the AV guard to work. As far as I know, there's no way to disable the nag screen. So you'd just have to live the nag screen bro, sorry. :)

Cool. I appreciate the info. Still seems to work nicely and doesn't lag the system at all.

    Obviously, you didn't try google:

    http://www.tipsfor.us/2007/08/15/make-a ... re-usable/

works great at disabling the nag screen for me.

I can confirm "CC" above's fix works fine to get rid of the nag screen. Avira's a very good AV. Note that (last I looked) it doesn't scan emails so you'd want to be using on online email service on the netbook.
