When the battery level goes to 30% or below with the wifi on, the screen will shut off and the machine freezes, you can't even shut off the wifi using the switch while it's frozen. However, if the wifi is off, the machine will go as far as 4-5% before the OS's power feature kick in and shuts the computer off.

I tried this with both Linux and Windows and both of them does the same thing, so I believe it is not a software problem.

Could this mean I have a faulty battery?

I went as low as 21% yesterday night with wifi on, and my One didn't shut down. I guess you must have a problem with yours... :(

I get a warning below 10% then a battery low warning. Only then if I continue using the One does it shut down.

The problem is solved! I did the BIOS update like you said and it worked! :D It would go all the way down to 5% where Kpowersave would kick in and shutdown the computer, thanks for the advice!

Well, theres must be something tricky.
I reinstalled my Windows and I have same battery problem again.
When it goes below 30% it hangs up, shutting screen down.

It's confusing, couse previous install was working ok untill I killed my Win with some stupid software instalation...

I've had this happening to my Aspire One as well. 30% and the screen blanks and it's locked up with my only option being to hold the power button down to manually shut it off. I updated the BIOS and still had it happen.

I called tech support and they are sending me a new battery and charger. The technician's thought is that we'll start with the simplest solution first (see if it's a battery issue) and escalate to sending the unit in for service if that doesn't solve it.

Well mine doesn't always do it after the BIOS update, about once every five charges. I asked Acer and they told me that it was a battery meter issue that will be resolved in later updates.

It seems pretty weird that the problem occurs at 30%, considering that its a 3 cell battery which means each cell contributes 33% of the battery power, does it mean that it could be a defective cell or is there is a voltage drop while it was switching to the last cell causing the screen to go off and hang the A1? (Correct me if i am wrong as i am not very familiar with batteries)

Would you recommend carrying out the BIOS update?

I have the same problem but am loathe to risk the BIOS update as it doesn't seem clear whether it helps much or not.

Beware of a possible correlation between an updated BIOS version and dying A1s.

Thanks for the warning. Better an A1 that shuts down prematurely than an A1 that doesn't start at all.

In my case it is not always at 30%. Today mine shut down at around 20%. I started it up again and got almost 10 more minutes out of it before it blanked out again. At this point I rebooted with an Xubuntu LiveUSB after which it happily ran down from 12% to 0% before a clean shutdown.

I am not quite sure how to interpret this. Either Linpus has a power management problem that Xubuntu doesn't have, though this would seem to contradict other posts where the problem also occurs with Windows. Or the problem is somehow related to SSD access as running off a LiveUSB doesn't use the disk.

Also, be aware that there is a concern that after upgrading the bios the One will die within a few days.

Got the new battery, still suffer the problem.

Tried the BIOS update, still got the problem.

There were some Live Updates this past weekend, still got the problem, though it seems it's not always at 30% but somewhere between 30-40%

*sigh* I really hate to have to send this in... I almost want to just go with it as is and just carry the extra battery with me. Will call tech support when I get home.

This is very weird that its not the battery's problem.

This is what I'm guessing why it's happening, as the the battery looses charge the voltage drops. Somehow some Aspire One motherboards are capable of handling that kind of drop and continue to operate as usual. But some other motherboards are very sensitive and can't handle that so the system crashes. Could this be the case?

I have the same issue with the machine crashing when the battery gets to around 30%. The only way to get it back up is to do a 'hard' shutdown by holding the power button in after it's been charged for some time, and then reboot. It's very annoying as it happens without warning. I think I'll get in touch with Acer support but I'll be interested in how everyone else gets on. Other than this the machine works perfectly and I'm very pleased with it.

    I have the same problem.

AA1 150 bought 20th August is Spain with no modifications (1 gb RAM, 120 gb HDD, Linpus OS, 3-cell battery, BIOS 3.114).

When operating with batteries and the level is below 20%, I have suffered this problem more than 10 times. I think it never happend when the power supply plugged.

The screen goes black, the fan still running, but the system is blocked because (for example) the led of caps lock doesn't respond to the key.

I have to turn it off pressing the on/off switch during several seconds and then the computer restarts twice. The first time it only goes to the Aspire One blue screen, takes some minutes and then restarts again with normal Linpus.

Is this the same problem for you? Any solution?

I think that downgrading my BIOS won't solve this problem.

I don't want to go to technical service if the only thing they will do is restoring my OS. I think this is not the solution either.

    Thank you for your feedback!

The symptoms I have are the same and I have the 3.109 BIOS so a downgrade is unlikely to help.

    UPDATED

I updated BIOS to version 3.301 and it DOES NOT solve the problem described here.

The first time I used the computer after updating, it didn't crashed until the minimum battery level. But the second time it failed with a battery level around 15%. So, more or less the same situation than before.

I have read about version 3.309. Is there any higher version than 3.301 available now?
